A's hope to break the brooms out on White Sox

Jun 2, 2013 - 1:24 PM (Sports Network) - With their sights set on a sweep the Oakland Athletics will clash once again with the Chicago White Sox in the finale of a three-game series at O.co Coliseum on Sunday.

J.J. Reddick took ball four with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Athletics to a 4-3 win on Saturday.

Oakland, which won 3-0 in Friday's opener, had a 3-1 lead in the seventh inning on Saturday but Sean Doolittle allowed a two-run single to Alejandro De Aza that knotted the game. From there Ryan Cook, Grant Balfour, Pat Neshek and Jerry Blevins combined to pitch three scoreless innings of relief with Blevins picking up the win. Yoenis Cespedes was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI while Chris Young went 3-for-6 for Oakland, which has won eight of its last nine games.

Hector Santiago walked five batters total in his 1 2/3 innings of work in taking the loss for the White Sox. De Aza was 2-for-5 in the contest with a double and two RBI and Adam Dunn added an RBI single.

Chicago has lost five straight.

After his last start was cut short, staff ace Chris Sale will take the mound on regular rest against the Athletics on Sunday.

Sale was the starting pitcher for the White Sox this past Tuesday against the cross-town rival Cubs, however, game was postponed due to rain in the third inning.

In the game Sale had allowed a two-run home run which ended a 23-inning scoreless streak for the left-hander but when the game was called, the streak became active once again. Sale missed his start before the outing against the Cubs due to tendinitis in his shoulder and is looking to make his first full start since May 17.

Before the injury and rain out Sale had been rolling along with the scoreless innings streak while the White Sox had won five-straight starts when he was on the hill. In Sale's most recent full start he lasted 7 2/3 innings and allowed just three hits while striking out a season-high 12 batters.

In his brief career Sale has made seven appearances against the Athletics, but only two of those have been starts. Overall he is 2-0 with a 3.79 ERA against Oakland.

Jarrod Parker has not had such a gap between full starts as he gets set to take the ball for the Athletics opposite Sale.

In fact Parker has been pitching better than any other point in the season of late. In his last three starts he has gone seven innings after not managing to do so in each of his first eight starts. Most recently Parker picked up his third win of the season after tossing seven innings and allowing two runs. It was the fourth-straight contest he has allowed three or fewer runs.

All in all, Parker's numbers are still not particularly desirable as he owns a 3-6 record and a 5.40 ERA in 61 2/3 innings pitched over 11 total starts.

Parker has made only one previous start against the White Sox and he will certainly hope to replicate that first experience. Though he did not factor in the decision Parker allowed just one run in 6 1/3 innings of work in the matchup.

Last season these teams met six times with each team collecting three wins.
