Minnesota power surge leads Twins to win over Mariners

Jun 2, 2013 - 11:48 PM Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - The Minnesota Twins hit four home runs and Scott Diamond pitched six scoreless innings in a 10-0 win over the Seattle Mariners during the rubber match of this three-game series Sunday at Target Field.

Josh Willingham had a two-run homer and Ryan Doumit, Chris Herrmann and Brian Dozier each added solo shots.

Diamond (4-4) had an impressive performance, allowing just five baserunners on four hits and a walk while striking out three. It was his first win in his last five starts.

"I'm pretty happy with it," said Diamond about his outting. "I was able to get in a rhythm and get back to what I know best, and that's getting ahead of hitters."

Seattle's Kendrys Morales remained hot, collecting two of the five hits for the Mariners, who return to Safeco Field on Monday to begin a 10-game homestand. Morales has hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games.

Jeremy Bonderman (0-1), who was making his first major league start since 2010 when then a member of the Detroit Tigers, lasted just 4 2/3 innings and allowed seven runs on nine hits. It was a total of 975 days between his last two Major League starts.

Dozier and Aaron Hicks each went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while four other Twins players recorded two hits.

Doumit got the home run derby going with a towering solo shot to lead off the bottom of the second. Following a fielder's choice by Hermann that erased Chris Parmelee, Dozier and Hicks hit back-to-back RBI doubles to up the lead to 3-0.

After a break in the third, the Twins would go on to score in four straight innings.

Herrmann got in on the action in the fourth by leading Minnesota's half of the inning with his first major league home run. Hicks tripled two batters later and came around to score on a Pedro Florimon sacrifice fly.

"Your first home run in the big league, that's a special thing," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire about Herrmann's home run.

Willingham one-upped the previous two shots by connecting on a two-run bomb to left after a Joe Mauer leadoff walk, making it a 7-0 lead for the Twins.

Minnesota tacked on another run in the seventh on a RBI single from Willingham. Dozier hit his solo home run in the seventh off Mariners reliever Hector Noesi, with Eduardo Escobar driving in the final run with a single later in the inning.

The Twins' bullpen surrendered only one hit over three innings to secure the shutout.

Bonderman had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in April of 2012 ... The Mariners only had a man in scoring position once ... Twins first baseman Justin Morneau was given the day off ... Dozier extended his hitting streak to seven games ... Morneau is one home run shy of tying Kirby Puckett for fifth on Twins all-time list (207).
