Mets pound Nats
Jun 6, 2013 - 4:27 AM Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Marlon Byrd belted a pair of homers and the New York Mets snapped a four-game losing streak with a 10-1 win over the Washington Nationals.Byrd and Anthony Recker both drove in three runs, while David Wright had a two-run homer and Daniel Murphy had an RBI double for the Mets, who recorded 15 hits to even the three-game series entering Thursday's finale.
New York starter Dillon Gee (4-6) had seven strikeouts and allowed one run on nine hits and a walk over seven frames. He also contributed offensively by driving in one run.
Ian Desmond knocked in the lone run for the offensively struggling Nationals, who have mustered just 11 runs over their last six games. Starter Dan Haren (4-7) lasted four innings, giving up five runs on seven hits.
"I laid another egg tonight," Haren said. "I have to be better."
Denard Span doubled to begin the home half of the first and scored on a two- out single by Desmond to give Washington an early lead.
However, Byrd's two-run blast in the second would give the Mets the lead.
An inning later, Murphy -- who came into the game hitless in his last 13 at- bats -- singled with one out. Wright then homered on the first pitch thrown to him by Haren to make it 4-1.
Following a fly out by Lucas Duda, Byrd hit his second homer of the night into the stands in left.
"It was nice to extend the lead and tack on runs," Wright said.
The Mets scored two more runs in the fifth. Murphy drew a walk to lead off and Wright delivered a single to left. After Duda and Byrd struck out, Ike Davis walked to load the bases. Recker then smacked a single to left, plating Murphy and Wright.
The Mets weren't done yet, though, as they added three more runs in the seventh. Recker ripped an RBI double, advanced to third on a Juan Lagares single and scored on a single by Gee. Two batters later, Murphy doubled deep to left to bring Lagares home.
After 107 pitches, Gee was replaced by Greg Burke, who allowed a one-out double by Anthony Rendon but nothing else.
Robert Carson came to pitch the ninth for New York. He hit Jeff Kobernus with a 1-1 pitch to start the inning, but got Span, pinch-hitter Chad Tracy and Ryan Zimmerman out in eight pitches to end the game.
Game Notes
Murphy hit his 19th double of the season, most in the National League ... Washington was 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position ... Desmond has hit safely in nine straight games ... Adam LaRoche went 1-for-2 for Washington and is 36-for-105 (.343) since May 2 ... The Nationals are 24-23 all-time against the Mets at Nationals Park.
