Ramirez's ninth inning single lifts Brewers past Phillies
Jun 8, 2013 - 6:19 AM Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Aramis Ramirez's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Milwaukee Brewers over the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-4, in the second test of a four-game series.Jeremy Horst (0-2), who recorded the final out in the eighth, stayed on to pitch the ninth for the Phillies with the score tied at four. Jean Segura reached base on an infield single, moved to third on Ryan Braun's base hit to center and scored the game-winning run on Ramirez's hit to left.
Milwaukee, which had lost four of five coming in, scored the final five runs of the game.
Yuniesky Betancourt, Alfredo Figaro and Segura each had an RBI for the Brewers, who went 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
Figaro got the start for Milwaukee and gave up four runs on seven hits while striking out six over 5 1/3 innings. Francisco Rodriguez (1-0) tossed a perfect ninth to pick up his first win of the season.
Erik Kratz hit a two-run homer for the Phillies, who had a five-game winning streak snapped. Delmon Young and Jimmy Rollins added an RBI apiece.
Philadelphia starter Cliff Lee allowed four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits while striking out nine over seven innings. Despite getting a no- decision, the left-hander is 5-0 over his last seven starts.
"[Lee] is one of the best in the business, and he has been for a while," Ramirez said. "Any time you come back against a guy like that, it boosts your confidence."
The Phillies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. John Mayberry doubled to left-center field and raced home on Rollins' base hit to the same spot.
Philadelphia tacked on three more runs in the fourth. Domonic Brown doubled down the right-field line, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Young's single to right. Kratz followed with a two-run homer to left-center field to make it 4-0.
The Brewers, who left men in scoring position over the first three frames, scored a pair of runs in the home portion of the fourth. Carlos Gomez walked and Rickie Weeks singled to get things started. Betancourt followed with an RBI double off the wall in left-center field. Figaro's RBI groundout cut the gap to 4-2. Betancourt got caught in a rundown between third and home when Norichika Aoki hit a grounder to third. Segura grounded out to keep it a two- run contest.
The home team scored two more runs in the seventh to make it 4-4. Aoki led off with a walk and raced home on Segura's triple down the right-field line. Segura also crossed the plate on the play due to Freddy Galvis' throwing error.
"Yeah, I'm not very happy about that to be honest with you," Lee said of the walks. "Especially there in the seventh, the leadoff walk obviously ended up scoring and I've got to do a better job of making him earn his way on base."
