Schumaker scores on wild pitch as Dodgers down Braves in extras
Jun 8, 2013 - 5:48 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Skip Schumaker scored the game-winning run on Anthony Varvaro's wild pitch in the 10th inning to vault the Los Angeles Dodgers past the Atlanta Braves, 2-1, in the second installment of a four- game set at Dodger Stadium.Ramon Hernandez singled, moved to second on a Varvaro (3-1) wild pitch before taking third on Luis Cruz's base hit to left. Schumaker replaced Hernandez on the bases and quickly scored when Varvaro delivered his second wild pitch of the inning.
Yasiel Puig continued his hot streak since reaching the majors with a solo homer and starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu worked 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball. He allowed six hits and one walk while striking out six. Brandon League (2-2) pitched the 10th inning to get the win.
Freddie Freeman went 3-for-4 and scored the Braves' only run on a Dan Uggla base hit.
Atlanta starter Paul Maholm allowed one run -- Puig's solo shot -- and four hits over 7 1/3 innings.
"Ryu pitched a great game. he and Maholm matched each other all night. It was a great game for the pitchers," Hernandez said.
Atlanta broke through with a run in the fourth inning. Freeman doubled to start the inning and later scored on Uggla's base hit to left field.
The Dodgers, who grounded into three double-plays, finally got on the board in the sixth inning as Puig smashed a solo shot to right field.
Over five games this season, Puig is 8-for-19 with four homers and 10 RBI.
Hernandez opened the eighth inning with a base hit, moved to second on Cruz's sacrifice bunt before taking third on a passed ball by Evan Gattis. Braves reliever Jordan Walden was able to get Juan Uribe to ground out to shortstop and after intentionally walking Puig, Walden induced an inning-ending fly ball to right by Mark Ellis to get out of the jam.
Jason Heyward hit a two-out double in the 10th inning, but League was able to get Justin Upton to hit a weak grounder in front of the plate. First base umpire C.B. Buckner called Upton out at first, but replays showed that Upton clearly beat Hernandez's throw.
"I didn't think it was close at all," said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. "And with runners at first and third and Freddy (Freeman) coming up you have to like our chances. We just never got the chance."
Game Notes
Puig became just the second player since 1900 to hit four home runs in his first five games. Mike Jacobs accomplished the feat for the New York Mets in 2005 ... Ryu hasn't lost since May 5 ... The Braves were 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base ... Despite dropping its last two games, Atlanta is 15-6 over its past 21 games.
