Twins and Nationals set for two in D.C.
Jun 9, 2013 - 1:09 PM (Sports Network) - Jordan Zimmermann hasn't lost at home this season. Scott Diamond is unbeaten on the road. The two hurlers face off Sunday afternoon when the Washington Nationals play a day-night doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins.
Zimmermann is 5-0 with a 1.23 ERA in six starts at Nationals Park. The no- decision came in his last start, Tuesday against the Mets when he tossed eight innings.
Diamond, a lefty, is coming off a 10-0 home win over the Mariners a week ago. In that game, Diamond threw six shutout innings. He's 3-0 in five road starts in 2013.
The night contest will see Samuel Deduno take the mound for the Twins. Deduno has been brilliant in his last two starts, allowing a total of one run covering 13 innings. He blanked Kansas City over six frames on Tuesday.
Nate Karns makes his third big league start when he gets the ball in the nightcap for the Nationals. The righty was charged with seven hits and four runs -- three earned -- in 4 2/3 innings of a 6-3 loss at Atlanta a week ago.
Today's doubleheader was made possible due to rain Friday night.
On Saturday, Ryan Doumit brought the go-ahead run home in the top of the 11th inning and the Twins held on for a 4-3 victory.
After Jamey Carroll's sacrifice bunt put the lead run in scoring position, Craig Stammen (3-2) intentionally walked Joe Mauer to get Doumit. Doumit then laced a single up the middle to put the visiting Twins ahead by a run.
"The last thing we needed from both sides was to go deep in extra innings," Doumit said. "I fortunate to get a pitch to hit there."
Glen Perkins worked around a two-out single to notch his 13th save of the season and help Minnesota secure its eighth win in 11 games. Josh Roenicke (2-1) pitched a scoreless 10th to earn the win.
Mauer had three hits, including the 100th homer of his career, and Brian Dozier knocked in a run for Minnesota in the victory.
Jayson Werth hit a two-run homer for Washington, which dropped its sixth game in its last eight contests.
The Nationals hadn't played since Wednesday due to a pair of rainouts.
"We had a couple of days off, and I was a little rusty myself," Gonzalez said. "I was trying to find the strike zone, but that's definitely not an excuse for myself."
The Twins and Nationals are meeting for the first time since Minnesota swept a three-game series at home back in 2008. This is the Twins' first trip to Nationals Park.
