Angels, O's resume set in Baltimore
Jun 11, 2013 - 2:48 PM (Sports Network) - Right-hander Miguel Gonzalez gets another crack at the team that originally signed him on Tuesday night when the Baltimore Orioles meet the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the middle test of a three- game set at Camden Yards. Now 29 years old, Gonzalez was signed as an amateur free agent by the then- Anaheim Angels in 2004 and was with the organization through 2008, when he was acquired by the Boston Red Sox in the Rule 5 draft.
The Red Sox released him three years later and was signed by the Orioles in March 2012.
He debuted in the majors with Baltimore and won nine games in 18 appearances last season, and has followed it up with three wins in five decisions across 10 starts this spring.
Gonzalez was a 3-1 winner at Houston in his most recent outing on June 6, when he allowed a run on five hits in six innings.
He dropped a 4-0 decision to the Angels in Anaheim on May 3 after allowing three runs on six hits in six innings.
The Angels counter with lefty Jason Vargas, who's not lost since tossing a complete-game gem against the Orioles on May 3.
The 30-year-old California native was winless in his initial five starts of 2013 before going the nine-inning distance and giving up just three hits in a 4-0 blanking of Baltimore.
The triumph upped his career mark against the Orioles to 2-2 in seven starts.
Vargas is 4-0 in six starts since, including a 3-2 defeat of the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 30.
His earned run average, which was 4.85 before the May 3 start, was 3.71 after a no-decision against the Chicago Cubs in his last start.
On Monday, Adam Jones hit a two-run home run to lead the Orioles in a 4-3 win over the Angels.
Jones drove in three while Nate McLouth, Manny Machado and Nick Markakis each scored a run for the Orioles, who have won their past two. Freddy Garcia (3-3) gave up just two runs on six hits over six innings to get the win.
Josh Hamilton hit a solo home run and drove in two while Mike Trout also hit a solo homer for the Angels, who have lost eight of their last 10. Jered Weaver (1-2) gave up four runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings to take the loss.
The Orioles won three of four games with the Angels when the teams met in a series in Baltimore from May 2-5.
