Galvis helps Phillies overcome Rockies
Jun 15, 2013 - 5:55 AM Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Freddy Galvis hit a pair of two-run triples to lead the Philadelphia Phillies in an 8-7 victory over the Colorado Rockies in the opener of a three-game set.Humberto Quintero drove in a pair of runs, while Galvis, John Mayberry and Kevin Frandsen each scored twice for the Phillies, who have won their past two games.
"It was a good comeback for us. We played sloppy at first, but we hung in there, and came back and won the game," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.
Kyle Kendrick had a rough outing as he was charged with seven runs on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings. Michael Stutes (2-0) pitched a scoreless sixth inning to get the win.
Carlos Gonzalez went 4-for-4 with a solo home run and scored twice for the Rockies, who have dropped three straight. Juan Nicasio gave up five runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings and also had a two-run single.
"I don't think he ran out of gas, he's a hard worker. I think he tried too hard and tried to be too nasty in his last inning. Next thing you know he's getting behind in the count and you have to throw a strike and the guys hit him," said Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba.
The Phils trailed by two runs entering the seventh and Domonic Brown led off the inning with a single. After Ryan Howard struck out, Wilton Lopez (1-3) took over on the mound.
Frandsen then flew out, but Mayberry drew a walk and Galvis laced a hit down the first base line and made it to third for his second two-run triple of the game. Jimmy Rollins then punched a pinch-hit single to right for an 8-7 lead.
Jake Diekman gave up a leadoff single to Gonzalez in the bottom of the seventh, and he advanced to third on consecutive groundouts. Justin De Fratus then took over and got Nolan Arenado to hit it back to the mound to end the inning.
Mike Adams gave up a two-out single to pinch-hitter Wilin Rosario in the eighth and pinch-runner Dexter Fowler quickly stole second. Josh Rutledge, though, flied out to right to end the frame.
Jonathan Papelbon allowed a one-out single in the ninth to Gonzalez, but struck out Michael Cuddyer and got Todd Helton to ground out to short to pick up his 13th save of the season.
Gonzalez hit a two-out solo home run in the first inning, his 19th of the year, and Nicasio smacked a two-run single in the second to give the Rockies a 3-0 lead.
The Phillies stranded a runner on second in the third inning, but got two across in the fourth as Mayberry scored one with an RBI double and he later scored off a single from Quintero to make it a 3-2 game.
Colorado, though, answered in the home fourth as Tyler Colvin hit a one-out single and scored on Yorvit Torrealba's double. Rutledge later hit his sixth homer of the year for a 6-2 lead.
It was a 7-2 game after the fifth inning as Arenado singled home Gonzalez in the inning.
Philadelphia put its first two men on base in the sixth and brought both home when Galvis smoked a triple to center. Quintero then scored Galvis to make it a 7-5 game and later had runners at the corners, but Michael Young hit into a fielder's choice to end the frame.
