Yankees hope to avoid 5th straight loss in clash with Angels

Jun 15, 2013 - 2:55 PM (Sports Network) - The New York Yankees hope to find some late success on their 10-game road trip as they take on the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Saturday night in the second of a three-game series.

C.J. Wilson pitched seven solid innings and was backed by 13 hits as the Angels downed the Yankees, 5-2, in the opener on Friday. Chris Iannetta drove in a pair of runs, Mark Trumbo went 3-for-4, scored twice and knocked in another, and Howie Kendrick and Mike Trout each had two hits and an RBI as Los Angeles won back-to-back games for the first time in June.

Albert Pujols also got into the mix as he went 3-for-5 with a double to extend his current hitting streak to five games. He is batting .429 with two home runs and four RBI over the span.

"This was a complete game for us," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "We did a lot of things on the offensive end, we pressured them every inning, and on the defensive end, outfield range showed up and the double plays were big."

The Angels still have plenty of work to do as they enter Saturday 11 games behind Oakland for first place in the AL West. They will trot Tommy Hanson out to the mound. Hanson will be making his first start in a week. He improved to 3-2 with a 4.12 ERA on the season at Fenway as he held Boston to two runs on seven hits in five innings, but only one of his wins has come at home.

New York began its 10-game road swing by winning three of four games in Seattle, but Friday marked its fourth defeat in a row. David Adams knocked in both runs for the Yankees in the series opener, but none of the visitors managed to notch more than one hit.

Mark Teixeira walked twice for the second straight game, but he has gone 0- for-10 with three strikeouts over his past three. The current slump has dropped the first baseman's average to .157 on the season.

"I think they're just trying to get the job done," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I've had a hard time figuring out what pressing means. I know what it means in basketball. I think guys are going to give a good effort, that's the bottom line, that's what you want them to do. They're going to work hard and sometimes the results aren't going to be there."

The Yankees did not record an extra-base hit on Friday and went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position, including leaving the bases loaded in the fourth inning.

The struggling offense will hope to get some help from starter David Phelps, who enters with a 4-3 record and a 3.90 ERA. The right-hander held the Mariners to three hits over six innings in his last appearance. Phelps has a 1.23 ERA in 7 1/3 innings against the Angels in his career.

Los Angeles is 26-12 in its last 38 home games against the Yankees.
