Chacin keeps Phillies in check, Rockies take rubber match

Jun 17, 2013 - 1:33 AM Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Jhoulys Chacin was incredibly efficient in pitching the Colorado Rockies past the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-2, in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Chacin (5-3) retired 14 in a row and one point and was one out away from his second career shutout before giving up run-scoring hits to Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard.

The late hiccup did not take away from his outing, as the right-hander gave up just six hits and two runs over 8 2/3 frames to pick up the victory.

"He's a great pitcher," Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez said of Chacin. "That was an outstanding performance."

The Rockies pushed three runs across against Cole Hamels, one coming on Wilin Rosario's home run in the second inning, and Colorado got some insurance in the eighth on Gonzalez's two-run homer.

Hamels (2-10), who has already lost more games than he had the previous two years, was charged with three runs on six hits over seven innings.

"It was a pitcher's battle and ultimately (Chacin) came out on top," a dejected Hamels said.

The Phillies had not lost a series against Colorado since the 2007 season and finished their road trip with a disappointing 3-7 record.

Rosario gave the Rockies the lead with a leadoff homer in the second, and it stayed 1-0 until the seventh inning.

Gonzalez led off that frame with an infield single and moved to third on Michael Cuddyer's bloop double down the right-field line. Gonzalez scored on Jordan Pacheco's soft groundout to third, and Nolan Arenado pushed Cuddyer across with a two-out single.

Gonzalez's 20th home run of the season came against Justin De Fratus, and Chacin was well in control prior to Cuddyer misplaying Rollins' fly ball to right field with two outs in the ninth.

The double allowed Ben Revere to score, and after Howard followed with an RBI single, Walt Weiss pulled Chacin despite him throwing just 86 pitches.

Rex Brothers struck out Domonic Brown to pick up his third save of the year.
