Jones powers O's past Tigers
Jun 19, 2013 - 4:42 AM Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Adam Jones clubbed a three-run home run to help the Baltimore Orioles take a 5-2 win over the Detroit Tigers in the second of a three-game set.J.J. Hardy hit a two-run home run while Zach Britton (1-1) gave up a run on five hits with three walks over 5 1/3 innings for the Orioles, who have won four of six.
Justin Verlander (8-5) had won his previous four decisions, but gave up all five runs on seven hits over five innings to take the loss.
"His command of his fastball was not good," said Detroit manager Jim Leyland about Verlander. "He had the velocity and had to go to it too early. If you had to sum it up simply, he didn't have command of his fastball."
Matt Tuiasosopo hit a solo home run and Austin Jackson drove in the other run for the Tigers, who had won three of four coming in.
It was a scoreless game until the fourth inning as Matt Wieters walked with one out and Hardy followed with his 14th home run of the season to give the Orioles a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, Manny Machado led off with a double and Nick Markakis followed with a walk. Jones then drilled the first pitch he saw over the right field wall for his 15th homer of the season and a 5-0 lead.
"We were able to get to him early," said Jones. "We were able to make him made early and got him angry, and that's the key."
Tuiasosopo got the Tigers on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff homer, a blast to right for his third of the year.
Three straight singles to start the seventh got the Tigers within three as Jackson singled home Omar Infante.
Darren O'Day got Torii Hunter to hit into a fielder's choice that saw Jackson forced out at second, then induced a foul out from Miguel Cabrera. Brian Matusz then took the hill and forced a foul out from Prince Fielder to end the inning.
Tommy Hunter twirled a scoreless eighth inning and Jim Johnson allowed two runners to reach with one out in the ninth, but got Cabrera to hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game and pick up his MLB-leading 26th save of the season.
