Yankees, Dodgers set for doubleheader in the Bronx

Jun 19, 2013 - 12:57 PM (Sports Network) - Rain put Don Mattingly's return to the Bronx on hold, so the Los Angeles Dodgers manager and former Yankee great will have to wait until Wednesday's doubleheader in New York.

The Yankees and Dodgers were scheduled to open a quick interleague set Tuesday evening, but rain washed away those plans.

Mattingly, more commonly known as "Donnie Baseball," played his entire 14-year career with the Yankees and had his jersey No. 23 retired to Monument Park. He also spent time as a coach with the Yankees on Joe Torre's staff from 2004-07.

"I'm excited about going back and being on the field," Mattingly said a few days ago on the club's website. "It could be a fun couple of days."

Mattingly should receive a nice ovation from the crowd.

"I think it'll be great," Yankees skipper Joe Girardi added. "Donnie is one of the greatest Yankees that's ever played. He's one of the greatest teammates that has ever put on that uniform. I know I've always loved him and appreciated what he's done, and I know the fans have seen a lot more than I have. I think it'll be a great day for him."

The Yankees are hosting the Dodgers in the Bronx for the first time in the regular season and the two clubs last met at Yankee Stadium during the 1981 World Series. New York took two of three meetings in L.A. in 2010 and has an 8-3 advantage against the Dodgers in the World Series.

The Dodgers lost two of three games in Pittsburgh over the weekend to open a nine-game road trip and are coming off Sunday's 6-3 loss. Andre Ethier had two RBI and Tim Federowicz drove in one run for the Dodgers, who have dropped six of their last eight games.

"We have to start throwing runs up consistently," Mattingly said.

Los Angeles starter Zack Greinke surrendered five runs on eight hits and two walks in five frames to absorb the loss.

Hyun-Jin Ryu gets the call for L.A. in the first game Wednesday and he is 6-2 with a 2.85 ERA in 13 starts. Ryu is 3-0 in his previous six outings and has never faced the Yankees. In six road starts, Ryu is 2-1 with a 4.10 ERA.

Chris Capuano is expected to be activated off the disabled list in time to start the nightcap. The Dodgers' left-hander has been sidelined since late May because of a shoulder issue and is 1-4 in six starts with a 5.45 ERA. Capuano has lost back-to-back appearances and is 0-2 with a 10.61 ERA in two career starts against the Yankees.

The Yankees, meanwhile, are back home for nine games after going 4-6 on a recent road trip. They halted a five-game slide with Sunday's 6-5 win over the LA Angels of Anaheim, but almost blew the win after allowing five runs in the ninth.

CC Sabathia got the win and allowed two runs in eight innings, while Mariano Rivera got the final two outs of the game for his 24th save. David Robertson was touched for two runs in relief.

"That was more exciting than we wanted," Girardi said. "CC gave us a big performance. We had the greatest closer in the world out there with Pujols up, and he got him out."

Travis Hafner hit a three-run homer during a five-run third inning and Jayson Nix recorded three hits and an RBI for New York. In injury news for the Yankees, first baseman Mark Teixeira was placed on the disabled list with inflammation in his balky right wrist and third baseman Kevin Youkilis will miss the next 10-to-12 weeks due to back surgery.

The Yankees have won three straight at home and will play 19 of the next 26 games in the Bronx. They sit four games off the lead in the AL East.

Hiroki Kuroda is set to take the mound in the first game and looks to end his five-start losing streak (0-3). Kuroda pitched well in a no-decision last Thursday at Oakland and gave up two runs in eight innings of a 3-2 loss. The right-hander is 6-5 in 14 starts with a solid 2.78 ERA.

Kuroda has never faced the Dodgers and is 4-2 with a 1.96 ERA in six starts at Yankee Stadium.

Phil Hughes gets the call for Girardi's club Wednesday night and he is 3-5 with a 4.89 ERA in 13 starts this season. He is just 1-3 in his past four decisions and has never faced the Dodgers. In six starts at Yankee Stadium, Hughes is 1-3 with a 6.52 ERA.
