Trout and Wilson helps Angels slip past Mariners
Jun 20, 2013 - 5:27 AM Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Mike Trout scored the game's lone run and C.J. Wilson tossed seven scoreless innings as the LA Angels of Anaheim beat the Seattle Mariners, 1-0, in the third contest of a four-game series.Wilson (6-5) continue his mastery of the Mariners by giving up just two hits and striking out three. The left-hander improved to 8-1 against Seattle since the start of the 2011 season.
"I threw a bunch of sinkers tonight and that kept the ball in the infield," Wilson said.
Seattle starter Joe Saunders (5-7) allowed one run on six hits over eight innings to take the hard-luck loss. The left-hander, who spent the first five- plus years of his career with the Angels, fell to 1-5 on the road this season.
"Joe was good against a tough lineup," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. "He got some big double plays when he needed to."
The Mariners' best chance to score early on came in the second inning. Kendrys Morales reached base on an infield single and Mike Zunino walked around a pair of outs. Michael Saunders fouled out to end the inning.
The Angels scored the only run in the sixth. Trout doubled to left, moved to third on Albert Pujols' flyout and raced home on a wild pitch.
Seattle again had runners on first and second in the seventh. Kyle Seager singled and stole second before Michael Morse was hit by a pitch. Wilson, though, retired the next two batters to keep the visitors off the board.
Scott Downs and Ernesto Frieri tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth, respectively, to secure the victory. Frieri picked up his 16th save of the season.
