Bonds, Giants hope to avoid sweep vs. rival Dodgers
Jul 15, 2007 - 2:19 PM LA Dodgers (51-40) at San Francisco (38-50) 4:05 pm EDTSAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) - Barry Bonds and the San Francisco Giants hope to avoid a three-game sweep against the Los Angeles Dodgers when the clubs face off in the series finale Sunday afternoon.
Saturday was a forgettable afternoon for Bonds, who remained at 751 home runs, four shy of Hank Aaron's all-time record. The seven-time National League MVP went 0-for-5, hitting into a double play, striking out twice and grounding out weakly to second twice.
But in that contest, Bonds did draw a ninth-inning walk and score the tying run to cap a five-run late-inning comeback. But Rafael Furcal snapped a 12th-inning tie with a sacrifice fly as the Dodgers held off the Giants, 8-7.
San Francisco will look to get back on track behind Noah Lowry (9-6, 3.35 ERA), who yielded one run and four hits in six innings in a 4-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on July 6.
The lefthander has won four of his last six starts, including three in a row.
He will be opposed by Brett Tomko (1-7, 6.18), who lost his spot in the rotation but will be forced to start with Randy Wolf still on the disabled list with a shoulder injury.
The righthander has been scored on in seven of his last nine relief appearances.
Los Angeles is undefeated at AT&T Park this season and has won 10 straight overall in San Francisco.
