Chatwood takes the ball for Rockies in D.C.
Jun 21, 2013 - 2:43 PM (Sports Network) - Young righty Tyler Chatwood will try to continue a successful start to 2013 on Friday night when the Colorado Rockies visit Nationals Park for the second of four games with the Washington Nationals.Chatwood, who has never faced the Nationals, was a five-time winner in 19 games with the Rockies last season while posting a 5.43 earned run average across 64 2/3 innings.
He opened this season with a no-decision against Atlanta, then reeled off consecutive wins against the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants (twice) before finally dropping a 3-0 verdict at Cincinnati on June 3.
He got back on the winning side in a June 15 outing against Philadelphia, allowing two runs on seven hits in five innings.
In 38 2/3 innings this season, Chatwood has held opponents to a .282 batting average, 15 points below his career mark of .297.
He's opposed by Washington phenom Stephen Strasburg, who's maintained a sub-3.00 ERA through 13 starts this season while nonetheless winning just three times.
The former No. 1 overall draft pick won just one of his initial eight starts of 2013, but has since picked up two more victories - defeating San Diego on May 16 and Philadelphia on May 26.
Strasburg is 0-1 with a no-decision in June, having dropped a 2-0 decision at Cleveland after tossing five innings of one-hit, one-run ball.
He's dropped two career starts against Colorado while allowing five earned runs in 12 innings.
On Thursday, Jordan Zimmermann pitched eight strong innings to lead the Nationals in a 5-1 win over the Rockies.
Zimmermann (10-3) gave up just one unearned run on six hits with a walk and nine strikeouts, in addition to driving in a run to win his second straight decision.
Adam LaRoche went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Denard Span and Anthony Rendon each had two hits and scored a run for the Nationals, who have won their past two.
Roy Oswalt (0-1) struck out 11 batters in his Colorado debut, but also gave up four runs on nine hits over five innings of work.
DJ LeMahieu drove in the lone run of the game for the Rockies, who have dropped four straight and seven of nine.
The teams met up last week in Colorado, where the Nationals won two of three.
