Carlyle, Braves try for sweep of Pirates

ATLANTA (Ticker) - Buddy Carlyle and the Atlanta Braves are playing great baseball to start the second half of the season.

Carlyle (3-2, 4.50 ERA) takes the mound as the Braves try and finish off a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.

Atlanta, which has won six of its last seven, has not swept the Pirates at home since June 2000.

Meanwhile, Carlyle is coming off the best start of his eight-year career. On July 6, the 30-year-old righthander beat the San Diego Padres by limiting them to three runs and eight hits, registering career-highs of eight innings and seven strikeouts.

Andruw Jones, who has been mired in a season-long slump, has begun to awaken, hitting .500 (8-for-16) with three homers in his last five games.

Jones homered and Jeff Francoeur hit a walk-off single in the ninth as the Braves posted a 5-4 victory on Saturday.

Paul Maholm gets the ball for Pittsburgh and will try and avoid tying St. Louis' Kip Wells for the major league lead in losses. Maholm (5-11, 4.76) has alternated wins and losses in his last five starts.

The righthander's latest start on July 6 resulted in a win as he held Chicago to four runs and five hits in seven innings.
