Rays, Yankees resume set in the Bronx

Jun 22, 2013 - 12:50 PM (Sports Network) - After splitting the first two games of a four-game series, the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees will face off again Saturday at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees evened up the series on Friday night with a 6-2 victory for their third win in five games.

Zoilo Almonte, who made his Major League debut on Wednesday night, shined for the home team, going 3-for-4 with his first-career home run.

"He's been on our radar for a while," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Almonte. "The time has arrived."

Lyle Overbay went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Ichiro Suzuki, Robinson Cano and David Adams all had an RBI as well.

David Phelps earned the win, allowing two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings of work while striking out four. Four Yankee relievers combined to allow just one hit and no runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Roberto Hernandez was saddled with the loss for the Rays despite lasting seven innings, as he allowed nine hits and five earned runs.

Ben Zobrist and Luke Scott both finished with two hits and an RBI for Tampa Bay, with Zobrist adding a stolen base as well.

Tampa Bay will turn to Alex Colome on Saturday to make his second start of the season. The 24-year-old rookie impressed in his major league debut on May 30, allowing just one unearned run in 5 2/3 innings while striking out seven to earn the win over Miami.

"I've waited a long time for this, and I feel very happy," Colome said following his debut.

Colome was sent back down to Triple-A Durham after his debut but was recalled when Alex Cobb went on the disabled list earlier this week.

The Yankees will counter with their ace CC Sabathia, who's enduring a down year by his lofty standards in 2013, sporting a 7-5 record with a 3.93 ERA.

Despite Sabathia's modest first half, he's pitched well of late with wins in three of his last four starts. He most recently pitched eight strong innings in a win over the Angels, allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out six on June 16.

The southpaw has enjoyed the confines of Yankee Stadium this season, earning five of his wins at home (5-2) with a 3.12 ERA while striking out 59 batters in 57 2/3 innings.

In eight matchups so far this season, the Yankees and Rays have split the series at four games apiece.
