D'backs blow past Chapman, beat Reds on Kubel's hit
Jun 23, 2013 - 2:46 AM Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Jason Kubel hit a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Arizona Diamondbacks to a thrilling 4-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds. The story of the game early on was the epic pitching duel between Arizona's Patrick Corbin and the Reds' Mike Leake. But both gave way to their respective bullpen after tossing eight solid innings.
Corbin was in line to become the first Diamondbacks pitcher to start a season 10-0, with his team taking a 2-1 lead into the ninth. Heath Bell, however, issued a leadoff walk to Brandon Phillips in front of Jay Bruce, who belted a two-run homer to right-center field.
Brad Ziegler (4-1) then replaced Bell following Bruce's second home run of the game -- he also took Corbin deep in the second. The Reds got a runner to third later in the frame, but Ziegler retired pinch-hitter Jack Hannahan on a liner to right.
Like Bell, Aroldis Chapman (3-3) blew a save chance as he failed to record an out in the bottom of the ninth.
The Diamondbacks loaded the bases on a Paul Goldschmidt single followed by two walks before Kubel sealed the NL West leaders' fourth straight win with a base hit to right.
"You just hate to lose it like that, hate to lose it late," said Reds manager Dusty Baker.
Hits were elusive through the first five innings, with Bruce's leadoff blast to center proving to be the only one.
The Diamondbacks were hitless until Corbin broke up Leake's perfect game with a two-out double in the sixth. The Cincinnati right-hander then lost the shutout when Gerardo Parra followed with a home run to right.
Corbin shutdown threats over the next two innings to preserve the one-run lead. He coaxed an inning-ending double play in the seventh and got two big strikeouts to strand a runner on third in the eighth.
"Obviously I'd like to get my 10th win out of the way, but we came back and ended up getting the win," Corbin said.
Game Notes
Bell has allowed a home run in five straight games ... Bruce posted his 13th career multi-homer game. He now has homered in four straight games, tying a career high, and in seven of his last nine games overall.
