Sizzling Blue Jays aim for sweep of Orioles
Jun 23, 2013 - 1:08 PM (Sports Network) - After extending their winning streak to 10 games on Saturday, the Toronto Blue Jays go for a series sweep over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday at Rogers Centre.Toronto managed to win their 10th straight in dramatic fashion on Saturday, with Jose Bautista breaking a tie with a two-run home run in the eighth inning to lift the Blue Jays to a 4-2 victory.
"It's been a great run and hopefully we can continue," said Bautista, whose long ball was his 16th of the season.
Maicer Izturis also went deep for the Blue Jays, who collected only four hits on the night.
Chien-Ming Wang allowed just one unearned run over 6 1/3 innings in the no- decision. Darren Oliver (3-1) earned the win despite allowing a run in the top of the eighth inning, and Casey Janssen pitched a clean ninth for his 17th save.
Miguel Gonzalez (5-3) was the hard-luck loser, allowing just three hits, three walks and three earned runs in 7 1/3 innings. Gonzalez exited the game in the eighth with an inherited runner, and Darren O'Day served up the home run ball to Bautista.
Taylor Teagarden left the yard for the Orioles, and Nate McLouth finished 2- for-4 out of the leadoff spot.
On Sunday, the Orioles will turn to veteran right-hander Freddy Garcia, who is 3-4 with a 4.80 ERA.
Garcia most recently appeared in relief on June 19, pitching a scoreless inning against the Tigers. His latest start was a rough one, as he allowed five earned run in 5 1/3 innings in a June 15 loss to Boston.
In 21 career appearances versus the Blue Jays, Garcia is 9-8 with a 4.03 ERA.
For Toronto, Josh Johnson (0-2, 4.38 ERA) will try once again to earn his first win as a Blue Jay.
Johnson was sidelined for six weeks with a right triceps injury earlier in the season, but he has been outstanding since his return, sporting a 1.86 ERA in three June starts. He latest start was his strongest yet, pitching 7 1/3 shutout innings with 10 strikeouts against Colorado on June 17.
"(It's) definitely the most comfortable I've been," Johnson said. "Just being able to get extension on all my pitches, not having to worry about the triceps or anything like that. It's definitely nice."
June has been Johnson's most effective month over the course of his nine-year career, sporting a 2.53 ERA over 163 2/3 innings.
