Papelbon blows another save, Padres edge Phils in extras
Jun 25, 2013 - 5:58 AM San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Kyle Blanks singled with the bases loaded in the 10th inning to lift the San Diego Padres to a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.Philadelphia lefty Cliff Lee pitched shutout ball into the ninth inning, but was denied his 10th win of the year, mostly because Jonathan Papelbon blew his fourth save chance in an eight-day span.
Blanks, who went 4-for-5, had a two-run single as part of a three-run ninth inning, and the Padres rallied to snap a two-game skid.
Lee gave up eight hits and was charged with a pair of runs and fanned seven, but Papelbon suffered his fourth blown save over a five-game stretch for the first time in his career. Prior to that, Papelbon had a streak of 20 straight saves going back to last season.
In the 10th, Justin De Fratus (2-1) walked Chris Denorfia and Carlos Quentin was hit by a pitch before Chase Headley walked. Blanks then grounded an 0-1 pitch down the left field line.
Luke Gregerson and Joe Thatcher (3-1) were fortunate to escape a jam in the top of the 10th inning, which was created due to a gaffe from Denorfia. Jimmy Rollins singled and Chase Utley followed by flying out to deep center. Rollins was running to second, but the ball slipped out of Denorfia's hand and Rollins scooted to third. Gregerson fanned Michael Young, and Thatcher got Domonic Brown to fly out to Denorfia to end the threat.
Quentin singled and Headley doubled sharply down the left field line to start the ninth inning. Manager Charlie Manuel lifted Lee, who departed after throwing 112 pitches, 79 for strikes.
Papelbon's first pitch resulted in a two-run soft line single to center by Blanks. Papelbon then grazed Jesus Guzman's jersey with a pitch, but Yasmani Grandal grounded into a double play to put Blanks at third.
The tying run came home when pinch-hitter Mark Kotsay swung through a pitch, but the ball got by catcher Carlos Ruiz to the backstop. The throw home to a covering Papelbon was late.
"Our guys had a very competitive feeling to keep going," Padres manager Bud Black said.
Eric Stults allowed seven hits and a pair of runs over seven innings for the Padres, but the Phillies got the early lead when a Ruiz single to center scored John Mayberry in the second.
Rollins lifted a sacrifice fly in the fifth to score Mayberry, and Brown made a sparkling defensive play with a diving catch in the seventh inning to deny the Padres after they put men on the corners.
Utley homered to center field off Tommy Layne to start the eighth inning, but the Phillies, who started a 10-game road trip, couldn't hold on in the opener of this three-game set.
Game Notes
Lee, who hasn't lost in his last 10 starts, has pitched at least seven innings in each game in that span ... Mayberry and Ruiz each went 3-for-4 ... The Padres are 10-4 this season against the National League East and have won six straight against that division ... Rollins and Utley have started 1,000 games together as a double-play combination, which is second-most among active combos behind the Yankees' Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano (1,036 games).
