Kendrick, Brown send Phils past Padres

Jun 26, 2013 - 5:36 AM San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Kyle Kendrick pitched eight strong innings and Domonic Brown belted the go-ahead three-run homer in Philadelphia's 6-2 win over the San Diego Padres.

Kendrick (7-4) allowed seven hits, a pair of runs and fanned six without walking a batter to snap a three-start winless stretch.

Brown, who clubbed his 20th homer of the season, drove in four runs. John Mayberry had the other RBI for the Phillies, who bounced back following a 4-3 loss in 10 innings Monday in the opener of this three-game series.

Jason Marquis (9-3) was dealt his first loss since April 22 against the Brewers. The right-hander, who had been 8-0 over his previous 11 starts, gave up six hits and as many runs with five walks over 4 1/3 innings.

"The Philly hitters showed a lot of patience tonight," Padres manager Bud Black said. "He's pitched so well for us and has been one of the better pitchers in the National League, but tonight he was off the mark."

The Padres had won each of his previous eight home starts, which was one game shy of the club record.

Kyle Blanks, the hero of Monday's win, singled to start the bottom of the second inning for the hosts. Yasmani Grandal doubled to left field, and Alexi Amarista grounded out to make it 1-0. Pedro Ciriaco singled to left for a 2-0 margin.

In the next inning, Jimmy Rollins walked and stole second. Michael Young singled with one out, and after Ryan Howard fanned, Brown launched his homer to right field.

The Phillies added three more runs in the fifth. Singles from Rollins and Chase Utley, and a walk to Howard loaded the bases with one out. Brown then walked, and the Padres went to Brad Brach from the bullpen.

A wild pitch scored the fifth run, and Mayberry's sacrifice fly plated Howard for a four-run cushion.

Pinch-hitter Mark Kotsay flied out to strand a pair of runners in the bottom of the seventh and Kendrick retired the side in order in the eighth.

Antonio Bastardo worked a shaky ninth to close the contest. Grandal singled to lead off and Ciriaco doubled with one out.

Jonathan Papelbon, who has blown saves in three straight games for the first time in his career, was warming up in the Phillies bullpen.

Bastardo, though, caught Chris Denorfia looking at strike three, and Logan Forsythe fanned on a check swing to end the game.

Game Notes

Phillies reliever Mike Adams is likely done for the season due to three tears in his right shoulder ... San Diego had won six in a row against the NL East ... The Phillies are 25-7 all-time at Petco Park ... Bastardo has made five straight scoreless appearances.
