Rangers outlast Yankees
Jun 27, 2013 - 5:32 AM Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Nelson Cruz belted a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to help the Texas Rangers beat the New York Yankees, 8-5.Adrian Beltre finished with three hits and two RBI for the Rangers, who had won five straight before losing Tuesday's series opener.
Ichiro Suzuki, who hit a walk-off homer to end Texas' winning streak, launched a two-run blast in the bottom of the seventh on Wednesday to trim the deficit to 6-5.
It was the second time in as many innings the Yankees had closed to within a run.
The Rangers went back up by three in the ninth, however, capitalizing on a dropped fly ball from Brett Gardner. After Beltre hit a one-out single, A.J. Pierzynski sent a Shawn Kelley pitch to left-center. Gardner tracked the ball down, but simply didn't make the catch, and the error left two men in scoring position.
Lance Berkman then lined an RBI single to right and Mitch Moreland followed with a sacrifice fly.
Joe Nathan retired the Yankees in order in the home half to earn his 26th save of the season.
Texas starter Justin Grimm (7-5) gave up a second-inning homer to Lyle Overbay, but Beltre and Pierzynski each hit two-run doubles off New York starter Andy Pettitte (5-6) in the third to put the Rangers up 4-1.
"I thought Andy was good. His control was good his cutter was good. He made a couple of mistakes, but he was very good," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi.
The Yankees battled back in the sixth, opening the frame with four straight hits. The first two were given up by Grimm, who was removed after an infield single by Gardner, one that deflected off the glove of the Texas right-hander, and a Suzuki double. Robinson Cano and Travis Hafner then greeted reliever Robbie Ross with back-to-back, run-scoring singles.
New York had the bases loaded following a one-out walk to Zoilo Almonte, but Ross preserved the lead by getting Jayson Nix to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Cruz extended the visitors' lead to 6-3 with his 20th home run of the year, a drive to left-center off Joba Chamberlain. Suzuki took Ross deep to right with two outs in the Yankees' seventh.
"Nelson came and got us a big home run. We just continued to fight and we were able to hold on," said Rangers manager Ron Washington.
Game Notes
New York first baseman Mark Teixeira has decided to heed the recommendation of team doctors and will have season-ending surgery to repair the damaged tendon sheath in his right wrist. The procedure will require 4-to-5 months of rest and rehabilitation, and Teixeira expects to be 100 percent in six months ... Pettitte lost his third straight start after allowing six hits in six innings ... The Rangers were 4-for-14 with runners in scoring position.
