Igawa looks to right ship as improving Yankees face Blue Jays

BRONX, New York (Ticker) - Kei Igawa takes the mound as New York Yankees look to continue their improved play when they meet the Toronto Blue Jays in the opening contest of a four-game series Monday night.

The Yankees started the second half of the season by winning three out of four games from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, including a 7-6 victory on Sunday afternoon.

Andy Phillips had and RBI single in the eighth inning and made a diving grab in the bottom of the frame to help spark New York to the victory.

The Yankees will look to keep it going behind Igawa (2-2, 7.14 ERA), who allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings in a 7-6 victory over the Minnesota Twins on July 5.

The much-maligned rookie lefthander has not won since April 28 and has struggled in his three starts since being recalled from the minors on June 22.

He will be opposed by Josh Towers (4-5, 5.07), who is 2-0 with a 4.63 ERA in his last four starts - all wins by the Blue Jays. The righthander tossed a season-high eight innings, allowing just three hits in a 1-0 victory over the Cleveland Indians on July 8.

Toronto, which has alternated wins and losses in its last six games, is coming off a split of a four-game series against American League East-leading Boston.
