Final/11
D'backs edge Nats in 11th
Jun 28, 2013 - 5:08 AM Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Didi Gregorius' bunt single in the 11th inning slid the Arizona Diamondbacks past the Washington Nationals, 3-2, to salvage the finale of a three-game series at Nationals Park.Miguel Montero led off the 11th with a ground-rule double to center off Craig Stammen (4-3) and moved to third on Cody Ross' sacrifice bunt. After a Jason Kubel walk, Gregorius laid down a perfectly placed bunt to score pinch-runner A.J. Pollock from third.
"It's a tough play to defend," Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond said of the safety squeeze.
Josh Collmenter (4-0) pitched a scoreless 10th inning to earn the win and Heath Bell grabbed his 14th save of the season by protecting the lead in the bottom of the 11th.
Aaron Hill had a two-run homer for Arizona, which snapped a three-game losing skid.
The Nationals, who were looking for their first sweep of the D'backs since Aug. 7-9, 2009, got their only two runs on Desmond's homer in the fourth inning.
The quest to become the first D'backs pitcher to go 10-0 continues for Patrick Corbin, as he received his fifth straight no-decision. He yielded two runs on five hits while fanning six in seven frames, while Arizona is now 15-1 in his 16 starts.
"Obviously I'd like to get a win, but if the team wins, that's what I want," Corbin said.
Opposite of Corbin was righty Stephen Strasburg, who pitched seven solid innings in which he surrendered two runs on six hits with four strikeouts. It's the first time Strasburg has allowed more than one earned run in his last eight outings.
After an hour rain delay, the pitching duel between the two young phenoms got underway.
Desmond blasted a slider that Corbin left up over the left-field wall in the fourth to give the Nats a 2-0 lead. Adam LaRoche worked a two-out walk to keep the inning alive.
Arizona tied the game in the sixth thanks to Hill's homer to center, which came two batters after Corbin helped his cause with a single to lead off the inning.
A Paul Goldschmidt single and a Montero walk followed Hill's blast, but Strasburg escaped without any more damage done by recording two flyouts.
