Final
Indians edge White Sox
Jun 30, 2013 - 3:36 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - One day after the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago White Sox combined to score 46 runs in a doubleheader, Saturday's contest managed to be much less offensive.Nick Swisher hit the go-ahead single in the top of the eighth and the Indians defeated the White Sox, 4-3, in the third game of a four-game series at U.S. Cellular Field.
With Jesse Crain (2-3) pitching for Chicago, Asdrubal Cabrera and Jason Kipnis hit back-to-back one-out singles and Swisher's base hit up the middle scored Cabrera for a 4-3 lead.
Joe Martinez (1-0) pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh to pick up the win while Chris Perez went 1-2-3 in the ninth to notch his seventh save and first since May 11.
Kipnis had a two-run home run while Cabrera hit a solo shot for the Indians, who took both games of Friday's doubleheader.
Conor Gillaspie and Dayan Viciedo hit back-to-back singles to start the away second. After Gordon Beckham grounded into a fielder's choice, Tyler Flowers delivered an RBI double to left to put Chicago on the board.
Cabrera hammered a 3-2 changeup to begin the fourth.
In the fifth, Alex Rios singled to left and stole second base and Jeff Keppinger drew a two-out walk. Gillaspie hit an infield single to Cabrera and Swisher needed to step off the base to catch his throw, allowing Rios to reach home. Dayan Viciedo then hit a line drive up to center, plating Keppinger.
Chicago had an opportunity to extend its lead after Ubaldo Jimenez walked Beckham to load the bases. However, Flowers struck out to end the frame,
Kipnis answered back with a two-run smash in the sixth, tying the game at 3-3.
"I thought Kips ... the shadows were coming out and it was getting real tough to see with that one swing, they (the White Sox) got a 3-1 lead and that one swing gets us right back even," said Indians manager Terry Francona. "Just keep playing and keep playing until they make you go home."
The White Sox were held to just two more hits and were unable to get a runner on base in the final two innings.
"We just got to keep grinding out," said Flowers. "Come to work every day ready to work hard and play hard. I think we're doing that but we're just not winning."
Game Notes
