Hot-hitting Cuddyer hopes to lead Rox to sweep of Giants
Jun 30, 2013 - 2:41 PM (Sports Network) - Michael Cuddyer tries to extend his franchise-best hitting streak on Sunday and help the Colorado Rockies complete a three-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants at Coors Field.Cuddyer's streak reached 26 games on Saturday and the Rockies won in thrilling fashion, as Nolan Arenado's RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning lifted Colorado to a 2-1 win.
"A lot of positives today," manager Walt Weiss said. "A lot of great things happened today. ... Cuddy extending his streak, lot of good storylines today."
Cuddyer, who has also reached base safely in a franchise-best 45 consecutive games, is batting .376 during his streak.
Buster Posey drove in the only run of the game for the Giants, who have dropped a season-high six straight games overall. Matt Cain tossed eight strong innings as he gave up just one run on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
San Francisco has also lost seven in a row on the road.
"We're in a funk right now and we're the only ones who can get ourselves out of it, that's all there is to that," said Cain.
Hoping to deliver the Rockies their first home sweep of the Giants since 2002 will be righty Drew Pomeranz, who will be making his season debut. Pomeranz had been 8-1 with a 4.20 ERA in 15 starts for Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Pomeranz was 2-9 with a 4.93 ERA in 22 starts last season for the Rockies.
San Francisco, meanwhile, will counter with lefty Madison Bumgarner, who had a three-start winning streak stopped his last time out. Bumgarner lost to Los Angeles on Monday, as the Dodgers reached him for three runs (2 earned) and five hits in seven innings, dropping him to 7-5 to go along with a 3.20 ERA.
Bumgarner was hammered to the tune of nine runs in 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Rockies back on May 17, but is 6-4 lifetime against them with a 3.12 ERA.
The Giants have split 12 meetings with the Rockies this season and have gone 33-15 in this series since the start of the 2011 campaign. Despite what's happened through the first two games of this series, San Francisco has still won 14 of 24 in Colorado over that time.
