Braves use longball to sweep D'backs
Jun 30, 2013 - 9:34 PM Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - The Atlanta Braves slugged three home runs off Trevor Cahill and completed a three-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 6-2 victory on Sunday at Turner Field.Freddie Freeman homered for the second straight day, blasting a three-run shot to break a 1-1 tie in the third. Brian McCann added a solo homer and Dan Uggla contributed a two-run blast to Atlanta's fifth win in six games.
"Today was a good day, we finally put some runs across," said Uggla. "You can't ever pick and choose when you're gonna score runs. You've got to grind out at-bats, you've got to battle."
Paul Maholm (9-6) worked an efficient 6 2/3 innings, yielding just a pair of runs on two double-play balls from Paul Goldschmidt. He scattered eight hits, two walks and struck out three in the victory.
The struggles continued for Cahill (3-10), who lost his sixth straight decision. He was on the hook for all six runs, walking four and allowing seven hits in just 4 1/3 frames.
The D'backs took their only lead in the first, when A.J. Pollock and Martin Prado began the game with singles to put runners at the corners. However, they produced just one run on Goldschmidt's double play.
"Obviously you want to play well everyday, you just have to let the games go in the past, whether you win or lose them and just move on," said Goldschmidt.
McCann drew the Braves even in the second with his ninth homer of the season, a solo shot over the left center field wall.
Atlanta then took the lead for good an inning later when Freeman supplied a 4-1 cushion by crushing a first-pitch offering into the seats in left center.
Cahill's outing ended before he could get out of the fifth and exited trailing 6-1 after serving up a two-run shot to Uggla. Over his last eight outings, Cahill has a 7.92 ERA.
Arizona's threat in the sixth was thwarted by its third double play of the afternoon, but a run did come home to make it 6-2.
Maholm exited with two away in the seventh after his walk of Cliff Pennington loaded the bases. Anthony Varvaro took over and induced Pollock into an inning ending pop up.
David Carpenter then tossed two hitless frames to cap the victory for Atlanta.
