Orioles sweep Yankees; Davis homers again

Jul 1, 2013 - 5:28 AM Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Chris Davis clubbed his league-leading 31st homer and Chris Tillman tossed six solid innings to help the Baltimore Orioles complete a three-game sweep of the New York Yankees with a 4-2 decision Sunday at Camden Yards.

Manny Machado collected three hits and finished a triple shy of the cycle, while Nate McLouth added a solo shot for the O's, who secured their first sweep of a three-game home series against the Yankees since April 15-17, 2005.

"I think it's a statement when you sweep anyone," Davis remarked. "We put a lot of emphasis on winning series, but sweeping a team in the division is huge."

Tillman (10-2) did his part in the series finale, as the right-hander struck out six and yielded just two runs on five hits to notch his seventh straight positive decision and set a new career-high for wins in a season.

With Tillman done after six strong, three Baltimore relievers combined to blank the Yankees over the next two frames before Jim Johnson worked his way threw a shaky ninth to nail down his 28th save of the season and the 100th of his career.

Robinson Cano stroked a solo homer and finished with two of the six hits for the Yankees, who have lost five straight.

New York starter Hiroki Kuroda (7-6) was charged for all four runs on seven hits while striking out seven over six-plus innings to absorb the loss.

"He didn't give up a lot of hits but the hits he did they were loud and they were home runs," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Kuroda.

Machado got the O's on the board in the first with a one-out blast into the left-field seats, but the Yankees got the run back in the second, as Zoilo Almonte smacked a leadoff single and moved to third on Chris Stewart's two-out base hit to right.

After David Adams walked to load the bases, Tillman issued a free pass to Brett Gardner to plate Almonte and tie the game.

Davis, who homered twice in Saturday's triumph, picked up his teammate in the home half when he launched a leadoff homer the opposite way over the wall in left center for a 2-1 Baltimore lead.

Davis' blast, his 12th in the month of June, broke Brady Anderson's franchise- record for most homers before the All-Star break, set back in 1996.

McLouth doubled the edge in the third when he belted a one-out shot over the high wall in right to make it 3-1.

New York sliced the lead in half in the sixth when Cano led off with a towering fly ball deep into right-center field, but the O's added an insurance run in the seventh to regain their two-run edge.

The O's chased Kuroda from the contest in the seventh after Matt Wieters stroked a leadoff single and J.J. Hardy followed with a double to left.

Boone Logan entered from the bullpen and got pinch-hitter Danny Valencia to ground one back to the mound for the first out, but Brian Roberts followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Wieters for a 4-2 lead.

The Yankees threatened in the ninth against Johnson, as Lyle Overbay laced a leadoff double and Stewart was hit by a pitch two batters later.

Johnson, though, bounced back with a strikeout of Adams before getting Gardner to ground into a fielder's choice to end the game.

Davis is the first player in major-league history to have at least 25 doubles and 31 homers by the end of June. His 31 homers are the most by a player before the end of June since Barry Bonds (39) and Luis Gonzalez (32) in 2001 ... Tillman hasn't lost since May 19 against Tampa Bay. His previous career- high in wins was nine, set in 2012 ... The Baltimore Orioles reinstated Roberts from the 60-day disabled list prior to the game. He finished 1-for-2 with an RBI ... The Orioles have won five straight at home against the Yankees for the first time since Oct. 3, 1981-June 21, 1983, when they won 10 straight ... New York went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
