Marquis, Padres close out set with Marlins

Jul 1, 2013 - 2:18 PM (Sports Network) - Jason Marquis tries to get himself back into the win column on Monday when the San Diego Padres close out a four-game set with the Miami Marlins at Marlins Ballpark.

Marquis lost for the first time in 12 starts on Tuesday against Philadelphia, as the Phillies reached him for six runs and six hits in just 4 1/3 innings. He also walked five batters and fell to 9-3 on the year to go along with a 3.99 ERA.

"Just one of those days. I could never get a feel for anything and paid the price," said Marquis, who suffered his first loss since April 22. "I tried to battle through and find a way. Sometimes you're able to do that and sometimes you're not able to do that. Tonight was one of those nights that I wasn't able to."

Marquis has enjoyed some success versus the Marlins over the course of his career, posting a 3-1 mark with a 3.49 ERA in five starts.

Miami, meanwhile, turns to young righty Jose Fernandez, who is 4-4 with a 2.98 ERA. Fernandez did not get a decision on Tuesday against Minnesota, but limited the damage despite not having his best stuff, as he allowed just a run and four hits with three walks in five innings of a 4-2 win.

"He kept us in it," Florida manager Mike Redmond said. "You think about a young kid who didn't really have his best stuff, but that was pretty impressive out there. He made pitches when he really needed to, and that's the kind of guy he is."

Fernandez, who has never faced the Padres, is 2-0 and has pitched to a 1.76 ERA in seven home starts.

On Sunday, Jeff Mathis' grand slam with one down in the bottom of the ninth inning, the 3,000th home run in franchise history, carried Miami to a 6-2 win.

Tyson Ross (0-4) walked Logan Morrison and served up a single to Marcell Ozuna before retiring Derek Dietrich on a fly out. Pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs was intentionally walked to load the bases, and, despite a five-man infield for the Padres, Mathis launched his game winner to left.

It made a winner of Steve Cishek (2-4), who turned in a scoreless top of the ninth.

Dietrich drove in two runs, while Morrison and Ozuna each finished with two hits and two runs scored for the Marlins, winners in two of three in the series and seven of nine overall.

Carlos Quentin hit a two-run homer for the Padres, losers in six of eight.

The Padres swept a three-game set versus the Marlins in San Diego from May 6-8, outscoring Miami 11-1.
