O's eye season-high win streak in opener with White Sox
Jul 2, 2013 - 2:45 PM (Sports Network) - The Baltimore Orioles take aim at their longest winning streak of the season on Tuesday, as they visit U.S. Cellular Field to begin a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox.The Orioles have won four in a row after sweeping the New York Yankees over the weekend, their first sweep of the season. They have yet to reel off five straight wins.
Still, Chris Davis continues to terrorize opposing pitchers. He contributed a pair of home runs and five RBI in Saturday's 11-3 win, then followed that up with his major league-leading 31st homer in Sunday's 4-2 triumph. He is hitting .332 on the season and has already driven in 80 runs.
"I think it's always a statement whenever you sweep anybody," said Davis, the first player in big league history to hit at least 30 home runs and 25 doubles before July. "We've always put emphasis on winning series and making sure we at least win the majority of the games, but when you can get a sweep, especially against a team in the division, it's huge."
Also huge for the O's on Sunday was the return of Brian Roberts to a lineup that is hitting .393 with runners in scoring position during the four-game win streak. Roberts, who was on the 60-day disabled list with a hamstring injury, went 1-for-2 and drove in a run.
Meanwhile, Chicago will try to avoid a sixth straight loss coming off Monday's off day. The White Sox suffered a four-game home sweep at the hands of the Indians over the weekend. The offense was little match for Justin Masterson on Sunday, as the Indians right-hander tossed a shutout to beat Chicago, 4-0.
John Danks gets the call for the White Sox on Tuesday, and he is coming off a solid outing against the New York Mets his last time out. The left-hander lasted 7 1/3 innings and allowed three runs (one earned). However, he did not get much help from the offense and was dealt his third consecutive loss.
"Yeah, it happens. That's baseball," Danks said. "It's good personally to have a good one, especially coming off the one I had. It's a tough game to lose, but it's just as much my fault as anyone else's. It's just the way it goes."
Toeing the rubber for Baltimore is Jason Hammel, who limited Cleveland to two runs on four hits over seven innings on Wednesday. However, Jim Johnson later coughed up a pair of runs in the ninth as the Indians rallied for a 4-3 run to spoil Hammel's effort.
This marks the first meeting of the season between these two clubs. Baltimore won six of eight meetings in 2012.
