Corbin tries again for 10th win against Mets

Jul 2, 2013 - 2:58 PM (Sports Network) - Patrick Corbin has played the role of stopper very well for the Arizona Diamondbacks this season.

The struggling NL West leaders turn to their unbeaten left-hander on Tuesday hoping to avoid a fifth straight loss as they resume a four-game series with the New York Mets.

The Diamondbacks are 15-1 over Corbin's 16 starts this season, with the second-year hurler himself going 9-0 with a 2.22 earned run average. However, he has not factored into the outcome of his last five outings since picking up his last victory on June 2.

Corbin has a 2.55 ERA over his winless stretch and yielded just two runs on five hits and two walks over seven innings at Washington on Thursday. Arizona won 3-2 in 11 innings.

"Obviously I'd like to get a win, but if the team wins, that's what I want. I just want to kind of keep us in the ballgame," Corbin said.

The 23-year-old, still looking to become the first Arizona pitcher to start a season 10-0, lost his only other career start versus the Mets. He allowed four runs on five hits and two walks in just 3 1/3 innings of a road setback on May 5 of last year.

Corbin will be looking to snap another winless stretch tonight as Arizona's starting rotation has not gotten a victory in 23 straight games. The unit is 0-9 over that span since a Wade Miley victory on June 5 and it is the second- longest such streak in team history according to the Elias Sports Bureau, behind only a 24-game span from April 17-May 14, 1998.

The Diamondbacks' bullpen has been able to pick up a few victories over that time, but twice failed to hold leads in Monday's 5-4 setback in 13 innings. J.J. Putz gave up a run ninth inning to force extra innings and Josh Collmenter suffered his first loss of the season after allowing Andrew Brown's two-run single in the bottom of the 13th.

That came after Cody Ross had given Arizona the lead in the top of the 13th with a solo homer, but the club still matched a season high with a fourth straight loss while falling to 1-6 on a 10-game road trip. Seven losses in eight games has trimmed Arizona's lead atop the division over Colorado to 1 1/2 games.

"It's really tough," said Collmenter, part of a D'backs bullpen that is tied for the major league lead with 16 blown saves. "Those are the ones that's disappointing. Sometimes you go through stretches like this."

Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer earlier in the game for Arizona, his career high-tying 20th of the season. He also leads the NL with 69 RBI.

Brown's game-winning hit improved the Mets to 2-2 on their seven-game homestand and capped a contest that saw the two clubs combined to go 6-for-29 with runners in scoring position and leave 31 runners on base.

It mattered little to New York at the end of the five-plus-hour marathon.

"It's just a fun inning," Brown said. "That's the way it's supposed to be written up I guess, right?"

First baseman Josh Satin had three hits and a walk as he has reached base in 12 straight games with a hit in seven in a row. He is batting .395 through 15 games this year for the Mets.

New York turns to Jeremy Hefner in the second contest of this series and has won each of the right-hander's past three starts. Hefner is 1-0 in that span and did not factor into a 3-2 win at Colorado on Thursday.

The 27-year-old logged six innings and gave up two runs -- one earned -- on five hits and a walk. It was his sixth quality start in his last seven outings and he stands 2-6 on the year with a 3.72 ERA in 16 games (15 starts).

Hefner is 0-3 in seven starts at home this season despite a 2.93 ERA and will face Arizona for the first time.

The Mets won four of seven versus the Diamondbacks last season.
