Bumgarner, Giants seek bounce-back effort vs. L.A.
Jul 6, 2013 - 3:38 PM (Sports Network) - Madison Bumgarner looks to keep rolling when he leads the San Francisco Giants into the second matchup of a three-game series versus the rival Los Angeles Dodgers at AT&T Park.Bumgarner has won four of his last five starts and pushed his record to 8-5 with last Sunday's 5-2 win at Colorado. Bumgarner fired seven innings of one- run ball, struck out five and walked three in his 17th start. He now has an earned run average of 3.08.
The left-hander, who is 3-1 in seven home starts, has faced the Dodgers twice this season, going 1-1 with a 1.20 ERA. Bumgarner has made 10 career appearances, nine of which have been starts, against L.A. and is 6-3 with a 2.54 ERA.
San Francisco will need Bumgarner's best stuff to break out of its funk and has dropped four in a row and 10 of the last 11 games.
In Friday's 10-2 loss to the Dodgers, Matt Cain was rattled for eight runs and six hits in 2 1/3 innings to absorb the loss. Cain is now 5-5 on the season for a Giants squad that is last in the NL West.
"When things aren't going right, everybody wants to be that guy to get something going," Cain said. "We just need to find a way to get things going in the right way again and really get past what we're in right now."
The Giants were coming off a 1-8 road trip.
Los Angeles improved to 3-1 on its nine-game trek and received 6 2/3 solid innings from rookie starter Hyun-Jin Ryu. Ryu limited the defending World Series champions to two runs and four hits to push his record to 7-3.
Juan Uribe was responsible for seven of L.A.'s 10 runs, finishing with a home run and a bases-clearing triple. His three-base hit came during a six-run top of the third inning. Uribe was 3-for-5 at the plate.
Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp, who left the game with left shoulder AC joint irritation, is listed as day to day. Kemp was pinch-hit for by Carl Crawford in the third inning and received a cortisone shot.
"The fact that it's an AC joint is a lot better than what it could have been," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "The last time we did this it was a couple of days and he should be ready to roll."
Kemp sounded off on his surgically repaired shoulder afterward.
"I took some swings in the cage and it hurt a lot," Kemp said. "Right now, it feels good, but cortisone makes anything feel better. We'll see tomorrow and go from there. I definitely won't be playing tomorrow."
The Dodgers have won 11 of their last 13 games and are tied with Colorado at 3 1/2 games off the pace in the NL West.
Los Angeles will turn to Stephen Fife Saturday and he has won back-to-back starts, receiving six runs of support in each. Fife recently shut down Philadelphia in last Sunday's 6-1 win and hurled seven shutout innings to push his record to 3-2 in seven starts with a 2.83 ERA.
Fife has lasted at least six innings in three straight trips to the mound and defeated the Giants on June 25, when he gave up three runs in 6 2/3 frames of a 6-5 win. The right-hander is 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA in two career starts against San Francisco.
In three away starts this season, Fife is 0-1.
The Dodgers and Giants have split 10 matchups this season.
