D'backs, Rockies continue desert series
Jul 6, 2013 - 3:39 PM (Sports Network) - The Arizona Diamondbacks look to pad their lead some more atop the NL West standings when they resume a three-game series versus the Colorado Rockies Saturday at Chase Field. The Diamondbacks are 3 1/2 games ahead of both Colorado and Los Angeles in the division and recorded a 5-0 win over the Rockies on Friday. D'backs prospect Tyler Skaggs struck out five over eight shutout innings and J.J. Putz sealed the club's third straight win with a scoreless ninth.
"I felt comfortable out there and felt like all my stuff was working today," Skaggs said.
Aaron Hill and Paul Goldschmidt each went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI and A.J. Pollock had two hits and three runs scored for the D'backs, who had dropped five in a row before this modest win streak.
Arizona opened a 10-game homestand versus Colorado and found out that shortstop Willie Bloomquist is expected to miss 6-to-8 weeks with two broken bones in his left hand. Bloomquist was hit on the hand by a pitch on June 26.
Wade Miley hopes to halt his five-start winless streak (0-2) when he gets the call for the Diamondbacks Saturday. Miley did not record a decision in Monday's 5-4 loss at the New York Mets and tossed 5 2/3 shutout innings with seven strikeouts and four walks.
Miley hasn't won since June 5 at St. Louis and is 4-7 with a 4.29 ERA in 17 starts. The left-hander faced Colorado on April 27 and did not factor in the outcome of a 3-2 win, as he worked 4 1/3 scoreless innings and walked a season-high seven batters.
In seven career meetings (6 starts) against the Rockies, Miley is 4-0 with a 2.79 ERA.
Colorado has dropped 12 of its last 17 games and opened a 10-game road trip with Friday's shutout loss.
Jorge De La Rosa was tagged with the loss and gave up three runs in 5 1/3 innings. Corey Dickerson, Michael Cuddyer and Nolan Arenado provided the three hits for the Rockies, who were outhit by a 10-3 margin and couldn't solve Skaggs.
"Skaggs worked both sides of the plate with his fastball. He had a good breaking ball and we just struggled to get anything going offensively," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said.
Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez missed the game with a back strain. He is considered day-to-day and owns 23 homers and 62 RBI this season.
The Rockies have lost three in a row on the road and are 16-24 away from Coors Field this season.
Rockies starter Drew Pomeranz made his season debut in last Sunday's 5-2 loss to San Francisco and looks to redeem himself Saturday. The Giants tagged Pomeranz for four runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings and belted a pair of homers. Pomeranz struck out five and issued four walks.
The left-hander, who went 2-9 in 22 starts a season ago, is 0-1 with an 8.03 earned ruin average in three career starts against the D'backs.
Arizona is 6-5 against the Rockies this season.
