Nats' Zimmermann toes rubber against Padres
Jul 6, 2013 - 3:41 PM (Sports Network) - Jordan Zimmermann tries to win his fifth straight decision and keep his perfect home record intact Saturday when the Washington Nationals resume their three-game series against the San Diego Padres.Zimmermann hasn't lost in his last six appearances with his last defeat coming May 29 at Baltimore. He tossed six innings in a victory against Milwaukee Monday. He's 9-0 with a marginal 1.50 ERA in 10 starts at Nationals Park this year. He is 14-0 over his last 21 home starts, last losing at Nationals Park May 17, 2012 to the Pirates.
The 27-year-old righty is 1-2 with a 1.33 ERA in four games against the Padres.
Jason Marquis tries to snap a personal 0-2 skid over his last three starts for the Padres. Walks and an error hurt his chances at coming up with a win Monday at Miami. Marquis issued a career-high seven walks but allowed no earned runs in a 4-0 loss to the Marlins. The righty pitched 6 1/3 innings, but the runs were not earned because of a throwing error by shortstop Pedro Ciriaco.
Marquis is 5-4 with a 3.51 ERA in 21 games (13 starts) when facing the Nationals. He went 10-14 with a 4.82 in 33 starts for Washington during the 2010 and '11 seasons.
The Nationals ambushed Andrew Cashner to win the opener of the three-game set, 8-5. Gio Gonzalez (6-3) survived the early innings to earn the Nats' fourth win in six games. He went 6 2/3 and gave up three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.
Wilson Ramos remained hot in his second game off the disabled list for a strained left hamstring. Ramos had two hits and knocked in three runs. Ramos had a go-ahead, three-run home run on Thursday and collected eight total RBI between the two games.
Cashner (5-4) lost for the first time since May 30. He had only allowed 11 earned runs in his previous five starts, but gave up six in only two-plus innings. The Nats battered him for five hits and three walks.
