Braves demolish Phils

Jul 7, 2013 - 3:32 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Jason Heyward hit a three-run homer and Dan Uggla added a two-run shot and three RBI to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 13-4 rout of the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.

Andrelton Simmons went 3-for-5 with a solo homer and two RBI and Brian McCann went 4-for-5 with a pair of runs scored for the Braves, who had dropped three straight entering the contest.

Tim Hudson (5-7) ended the longest winless drought of his career after spinning seven innings of one-run ball. He scattered five hits and struck out four without issuing a walk to earn his first win since May 5.

"Hudson really pitched great. He gave us seven innings of good baseball," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "It was a tough night to pitch with the humidity. We swung the bats and gave him a nice little lead. It was a good night."

Michael Young hit a two-run homer and Jimmy Rollins and Kevin Frandsen added one RBI apiece for the Phillies, who lost for just the second time in five games.

Kyle Kendrick (7-6) was tagged for six runs on 12 hits and two walks over five innings to absorb the loss.

Earlier on Saturday, the Phillies placed first baseman Ryan Howard on the 15- day disabled with left knee inflammation.

"We had said before if it got to the point where his knee got so debilitated and he couldn't perform, go ahead and shut him down," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said.

Amaro also noted Howard will have an MRI exam of his knee either Sunday or Monday. It is unclear if the injury will require surgery.

Simmons led the game off with a solo homer to give the Braves an early lead.

Atlanta added two more in the second inning. McCann opened the frame with a single and Uggla followed with a two-run shot to left field. It was his 16th home run of the season.

The Phillies finally broke through in the third. With runners on the corners, Rollins smacked a base hit to center to score Ben Revere.

The Braves answered back with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a commanding 6-1 lead.

With runners on the corners and two outs in the fourth, Justin Upton roped a base hit to left field to score Chris Johnson.

McCann opened the fifth with a double before moving to third on B.J. Upton's base hit. Johnson then grounded out to second base to score McCann. Hudson followed with a base hit to left field to bring Upton around to give Atlanta a 6-1 lead.

The Braves broke the game wide open with a four-run seventh inning. Johnson scored Uggla with a ground out. Later in the frame Heyward smashed his three- run blast over the wall in right field to make it 10-1.

The teams traded sacrifice flys in the eighth before Atlanta added two more in the ninth to take a 13-2 lead.

Simmons tripled home Gerald Laird before coming across on Reed Johnson's RBI single to center for the 11-run advantage.

Young's two-run shot in the ninth accounted for the final difference.
