Brown helps Phils steal series from Braves
Jul 8, 2013 - 1:26 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Domonic Brown went 2-for-4 with a triple, homer and two RBI to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 7-3 win over the Atlanta Braves in the rubber match of a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park.Ben Revere added a two-run triple, Delmon Young had an RBI and Darin Ruf doubled and scored a pair of runs for the Phillies, winners in four of their last six games.
Jonathan Pettibone (5-3) gave up just one run and scattered five hits and a walk while striking out six over 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win.
"If we stay at it and grind it out, we can win. We've been there before. What the heck? We have guys in our clubhouse who know how to win," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.
Chris Johnson hit a solo homer and Jason Heyward added an RBI for the Braves, losers in four of their last five.
Kris Medlen (6-8) allowed seven runs -- six earned -- on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings to snap a three-start winning streak. He struck out five and walked three in his first loss since June 14.
"It came down to execution and I didn't execute," Medlen said. "They're a veteran team and they make you throw it down the middle. They're a quality team. It was one of those days for me."
Philadelphia jumped out to 2-0 lead in the first. Chase Utley ripped a two-out base hit then scored on Brown's triple to right field. Brown ripped one down the line that tipped off the Freddie Freeman's glove and trickled into the right- field corner, allowing Utley to score easily from first base. Following a Michael Young walk, Delmon Young blooped a single to center to push Brown across.
The Phils added two more in the fourth. Delmon Young walked and Ruf doubled to put two on. After Carlos Ruiz flew out and Pettibone struck out, Revere slapped a triple into the left-center gap to clear the bases.
The Braves finally got on the board in the fifth. With runners on second and third, Medlen ripped a single through the hole on the left side to score Brian McCann.
Brown cracked a solo homer in the home half to push the Phillies' spread to 5-1. Brown turned on an inside fastball and just barely cleared the wall in right field.
Philadelphia tacked on two more runs in the seventh. With runners on second and third, reliever Alex Wood bounced a wild pitch past McCann, allowing Ruf to score. McCann's throw to Wood at the plate was off target and bounced away, allowing Ruiz to score to put the Phillies up six runs.
The Braves answered back with a pair of runs in the seventh. Johnson laced leadoff homer and Heyward added an RBI single later in the frame to pull Atlanta within 7-3.
