Wakefield goes for fourth straight against Royals

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Tim Wakefield will look for his fourth straight win in as many starts as the Boston Red Sox host the Kansas City Royals in the second of a three-game series on Tuesday.

Wakefield (10-8, 4.47 ERA) has picked up a win in five of his last six starts. The 40-year-old knuckleballer pitched six innings, giving up four runs and nine hits with two strikeouts in a 7-4 triumph over the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday.

The Royals will counter with John Thomson (1-1, 3.38), who will be making just his third start of the season.

The 33-year-old Thomson last just 3 2/3 innings in his last outing, surrendering two runs and seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts in a 3-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox on July 1.

The Red Sox recorded a 4-0 victory over the Royals on Monday after rookie Kason Gabbard pitched a three-hit shutout and Dustin Pedroia, Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz all homered.

Kansas City will hope to avoid its third straight loss.
