Santana takes mound against Devil Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- A pair of struggling pitchers take the mound as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim square off against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the opener of a three-game series on Tuesday.

Ervin Santana (5-10, 5.97 ERA) is 1-4 with a 7.36 ERA over his last six starts. In his last outing, he lasted just three innings in a loss to the New York Yankees, allowing seven hits and nine runs.

Santana will be opposed by James Shields (7-5, 3.98), who has lost five of his last six starts after starting the season 6-0. The righthander has yielded 10 home runs during the stretch.

The 25-year-old Shields pitched six innings, surrendering six runs - five earned - and nine hits with two strikeouts in a 7-3 loss to the Yankees on Thursday.

Tampa Bay, which is hoping to avoid a three-game losing skid, has lost 16 of its last 18 contests.

The Angels swept the Devil Rays in a two-game series earlier this season, the clubs' only two meetings this year.
