Thompson looks to lead Carindals to third win in a row
Jul 17, 2007 - 4:05 PM St Louis (42-47) at Florida (44-49) 7:05 pm EDTMIAMI (Ticker) - The St. Louis Cardinals will try to push their winning streak to three games when they meet the Florida Marlins in the second of a three-game series on Tuesday.
In Monday's series opener, Braden Looper finally broke through for his first win in six starts as the defending World Series champion posted a 5-3 victory.
Brad Thompson (6-3, 5.10 ERA) takes the mound for the Cardinals, who have won eight of 10 games in Florida overall. In his last start, Thompson gave up four runs in seven innings for a no-decision vs. Arizona on July 4.
The 25-year-old righthander will be making his first career start against the Marlins.
Florida counters with Rick Vanden Hurk (2-2, 8.38), who goes in search of his first home win this season. He battled through six innings, allowing six runs and seven hits for a 9-8 triumph at Kansas City.
The rookie righthander has been hammered for 19 runs in four starts at home this season and will also be making his first appearance against the Cardinals.
Marlins All-Star Miguel Cabrera hit his 22nd homer in Monday's loss. The third baseman has four homers in his last 14 at-bats since the All-Star break.
