Young hitters look to power Brewers past Diamondbacks
Jul 17, 2007 - 4:10 PM Arizona (49-45) at Milwaukee (52-40) 8:05 pm EDTMILWAUKEE (Ticker) - Rookie Ryan Braun will look to help the Milwaukee Brewers win their fourth straight when they host the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second of a four-game series Tuesday.
The 23-year-old Braun has seven home runs in his last nine contests, and 14 blasts on the season.
As Braun is putting together an argument for the National League Rookie of the Year honors, Prince Fielder has emerged as one of the top candidates for the league's Most Valuable Player award, posting a .282 batting average with 30 homers and 72 RBI.
Claudio Vargas (6-2, 4.52 ERA) takes the mound for the Brewers, who hold a 3 1/2 game lead over the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central.
The 29-year-old Vargas suffered his first loss since May 26 in his last start. The Dominican righthander hurled six innings, yielding five runs and six hits with two walks and four strikeouts in a 5-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 4.
He will be opposed by Yusmeiro Petit (1-1, 3.12), who is making just his fifth career start after spending most of his 2006 campaign coming out of the bullpen. The 22-year-old righthander surrendered three runs and five hits with four walks and a career-high eight strikeouts in a 4-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on July 8.
The Diamondbacks are hoping to avoid their third straight loss and 11th in their last 14 contests.
