Arroyo leads Reds into matchup with Braves

Jul 12, 2013 - 2:49 PM (Sports Network) - Veteran righty Bronson Arroyo looks for his third win since the start of June on Friday night when the Cincinnati Reds visit Turner Field for the second of four games against the Atlanta Braves.

Arroyo was a 3-0 winner over the Colorado Rockies on June 3 to get to 6-5 on the season, but has since won just once in six starts to fall back to .500 overall.

The Key West, Fla. native was a 3-1 loser to Seattle in his most recent outing on July 7 in Cincinnati, allowing three runs on five hits in six innings with a walk and six strikeouts.

He dropped a 7-4 verdict to the Braves on May 6 at home after being tagged for eight hits and four runs in five innings.

Arroyo is 6-4 in 17 career meetings with the Braves and 3-2 in seven career starts at Turner Field with a 5.60 earned run average in 35 1/3 innings.

He faces righty Kris Medlen, who had won three straight starts before a July 7 loss at Philadelphia.

The 27-year-old, who was 10-1 in 50 appearances for the Braves in 2012, ran his 2013 record to 6-7 with consecutive defeats of the New York Mets, Kansas City and Miami on June 19 and 25 and July 2.

The streak ended when the Phillies tagged him for seven runs in 5 1/3 innings of Atlanta's 7-3 loss.

Medlen has a blown save and a 3.60 ERA in 15 career innings against the Reds, including a May 7 no-decision in which he allowed two runs in seven innings of a game the Braves ultimately lost, 5-4.

On Thursday, Freddie Freeman went 3-for-4 with a season-high four RBI to help the Braves beat the Reds, 6-5.

"We got a lot of scouting on Freeman but when a hitter can hit and he's hot, scouting doesn't do you any good," said Reds manager Dusty Baker. "He was in attack mode."

After not recording a win in his previous nine starts, Tim Hudson (6-7) has won two in a row. He yielded four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits while striking out five over seven innings.

"It was a really good win for us, their a really good team," said Hudson. "It was a great all the way around type ball game for us."

Craig Kimbrel secured his 25th save after working around a leadoff single in the ninth.

Justin Upton collected three hits, scored two runs and drove in a run while Reed Johnson added an RBI for the Braves, winners of three of their last four.

Mat Latos (8-3) had arguably his worst showing of the season. He was dinged for six runs on nine hits, both equaling season-highs, with seven strikeouts in just four innings of work, his shortest outing of the year.

Brandon Phillips had two hits and two RBI, while Joey Votto and Jay Bruce each recorded an RBI for the Reds, who have lost four of their last five.

The Braves won two out of three in a series with the Reds in early May in Cincinnati, outscoring the hosts, 18-11. The Reds won five of six games between the teams in 2012.
