Buehrle faces Indians in second start since inking deal

Jul 18, 2007 - 1:34 PM Chi White Sox (41-51) at Cleveland (55-38) 12:05 pm EDT

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Mark Buehrle again is out to show the Chicago White Sox that he is worth every penny of his new contract.

Buehrle takes the mound Wednesday when the White Sox face the Cleveland Indians in the finale of a three-game series.

The lefthanded Buehrle (6-5, 2.98 ERA) was outstanding in his first start since signing a four-year, $56 million extension prior to the All-Star break.

Buehrle went the distance on Friday against the Baltimore Orioles, allowing just two solo home runs, but was outpitched by Erik Bedard in a 2-0 loss.

Lefthanded hitters are hitting .323 against Buehrle this season while righthanders have managed just a .221 average. Of Buehrle's 15 home runs allowed, 11 have been hit by righthanded hitters.

Jake Westbrook (1-4, 6.08) gets the start for the Indians, who are 34-14 at Jacobs Field this season. Since returning from the disabled list last month, Westbrook is 0-2 in four starts but has lasted six or more innings in each of those outings.

The righthanded Westbrook faced the White Sox in his first start of the season on April 4 and was hit hard, allowing seven runs in five innings.

The White Sox led Tuesday's game, 5-3, in the ninth inning. But closer Bobby Jenks allowed a two-run home run to Ryan Garko, who then delivered the game-winning single in the 11th.
