Miller has tough task against Twins, Santana
Jul 18, 2007 - 1:44 PM Detroit (55-36) at Minnesota (49-44), 8:10 pm EDTMINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) - When the Detroit Tigers drafted Andrew Miller with the sixth overall pick in the 2006 draft, they saw the lefthander as their future version of the Minnesota Twins' Johan Santana.
Miller will square off against Santana on Wednesday when the Twins host the Tigers in the middle game of a three-game series.
Miller's meteoric rise through the Detroit system has seen him take seven starts in the majors in just his second professional season, dominating at times. Minnesota, however, had no problem with the 22-year-old when they faced him at the Metrodome on June 30, pushing six runs across the plate - five earned - in five innings to hand the youngster a loss.
Miller (4-3, 3.35 ERA) rebounded nicely from that drubbing, surrendering three combined earned runs over his past two starts, going 1-1 against Boston and at Seattle.
Fresh off his third straight All-Star appearance, Santana (11-6, 2.60) tossing seven scoreless innings last Friday against Oakland to push his post-All-Star break record to 33-3 since 2004.
Behind Nate Robertson, the Tigers posted a 1-0 victory in Tuesday's series opener.
