Pirates look to avoid sixth straight loss

Jul 18, 2007 - 1:56 PM Colorado (47-46) at Pittsburgh (40-53) 12:35 pm EDT

PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- The Pittsburgh Pirates look to avoid their sixth consecutive defeat when the host the Colorado Rockies in the finale of a three-game series on Wednesday.

Winless since the All-Star break, Pittsburgh has matched its worst losing streak of the season following a 6-2 loss to Colorado on Tuesday.

The Pirates will turn to starter Ian Snell (7-6, 3.11 ERA) to stop the bleeding. The righthander has enjoyed pitching at home, where he is 6-2 with a 2.40 ERA in nine starts this season.

In his last outing at Atlanta on Friday, Snell gave up seven runs - four earned - and eight hits in five innings of a 9-1 loss.

Jeff Francis (9-5, 4.15) gets the start for the Rockies, aiming for his fourth straight win.

Despite the winning ways, Francis hasn't been all that effective in his last two outings, giving up six runs in five innings in each start. Francis is 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA in two career starts at PNC Park.

Jamey Carroll had three hits, including an RBI double during a four-run second inning, for the win on Tuesday, the Rockies' eighth in their last 11 games.

The victory ensured Colorado's first series win at PNC Park. They had failed to win the previous eight sets here since the park opened in 2001.
