Clemens hopes to keep red-hot Yankees rolling

Jul 18, 2007 - 2:32 PM Toronto (45-48) at NY Yankees (47-44) 7:05 pm EDT

BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- If the New York Yankees hope to continue gaining ground in the American League postseason race, they will need Roger Clemens to continue defying Father Time.

Clemens and the Yankees aim for their fifth straight win Wednesday when they host the Toronto Blue Jays.

After going 2-9 from June 19-July 1 and slipping four games below .500, New York has won 10 of its last 13 contests to claw its way back into playoff contention.

The Yankees extended their winning streak to four games Tuesday thanks to Robinson Cano, who ripped a game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning to complete a wild 3-2 triumph.

A day later, the Yankees give the ball to Clemens (2-4, 4.20 ERA), who was on the hill the last time New York lost a contest. The future Hall of Famer delivered one of his worst outings of the season in Friday's 6-4 loss to Tampa Bay, yielding five runs and four walks in 5 1/3 innings.

The 44-year-old Clemens, who captured two AL Cy Young awards as a member of the Blue Jays, owns a 23-12 lifetime record against Toronto.

The Blue Jays counter with Shaun Marcum (5-3, 3.68), who registered his first win in five starts Friday. The righthander allowed five runs and seven hits in six frames of a 6-5 victory at Boston.

Marcum was lights out in his last outing against the Yankees, tossing six scoreless innings on May 29.
