White Sox take another from Braves
Jul 22, 2013 - 12:24 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Jose Quintana pitched 5 2/3 solid innings to help lift the Chicago White Sox to a 3-1 win over the Atlanta Braves in the rubber match of a three-game set at U.S. Cellular field.Quintana (5-2) extended his unbeaten streak to 10 starts but picked up just his second win in that span. He allowed just one run on nine hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
His last loss came almost two months ago on May 27 against the Cubs.
Addison Reed faced the minimum in the ninth to grab his 25th save of the season.
Alex Rios, Adam Dunn and Dayan Viciedo all collected an RBI for the White Sox, who have won two in a row after dropping three straight.
"We're playing good, clean baseball," Dunn said.
Mike Minor (9-5) continues to have effective starts on the road, but this time the Braves couldn't help him out. He yielded three runs -- two earned -- on five hits over eight innings in a complete-game effort.
Evan Gattis drove in the lone run for the Braves, losers in three of their last four.
Dunn slapped a two-out fastball up the middle for a single that got the White Sox on the board in the bottom of the first. Alejandro De Aza worked a walk to start the frame and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
The Braves had the bases loaded in the second with none out but failed to capitalize. After Dan Uggla struck out, Reed Johnson lined out to shortstop Alexei Ramirez, who doubled off Brian McCann at second.
Atlanta loaded the bases for a second straight inning following a two-out walk and single. This time, White Sox second baseman Jeff Keppinger made a sensational diving catch to snag a sharp bouncer from McCann to end the threat.
"This game of ours is cruel, at times," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said.
De Aza smacked his 20th double of the year to start the third and moved to third on a flyout. Rios drove him in with a bloop hit to shallow right.
Gattis scorched a ball off the glove of third baseman Brent Morel to score Chris Johnson from second with two outs in the fifth and cut Atlanta's deficit to 2-1.
Rios singled, then stole second to begin the sixth and an Andrelton Simmons fielding error put runners on the corners with no outs. Two batters later, Viciedo's sac fly made it 3-1 in favor of the White Sox.
