Brewers go with Gorzelanny against Padres
Jul 22, 2013 - 2:55 PM (Sports Network) - Lefty Tom Gorzelanny makes just his fourth start of the season on Monday night when the Milwaukee Brewers host the San Diego Padres to open a four-game series at Miller Park.A former second-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Gorzelanny has been largely a reliever and spot starter since 2010, when he began 23 of 29 games with the Chicago Cubs.
He made 15 starts in 30 appearances with Washington in 2011 and one start in 45 games last season before heading to Milwaukee for 2013. Thus far this year, he's started three times in 35 games.
Two of those starts came on July 7 and July 12 and both ended in losses, though the Illinois native combined to allow just four runs on 11 hits in 12 innings against the New York Mets and Arizona.
The Brewers have won just two of the last 10 games in which he's pitched, but none since June 15 - a stretch of eight straight.
Gorzelanny is 1-3 in nine career meetings with San Diego.
The Padres counter with righty Andrew Cashner, who has not picked up a win himself since mid-June.
The 26-year-old was 5-3 on the season after an eight-inning effort that beat Atlanta, but is 0-2 in five appearances since - though he's allowed only 15 runs in the five outings.
The most recent came July 10 against Colorado and ended in a 5-4 loss after Cashner was touched for two earned runs on eight hits in five innings of work.
He's 1-0 in seven meetings with Milwaukee, including one start and six relief appearances.
On Sunday in St. Louis, Allen Craig snagged Jedd Gyorko's fly ball for the 27th out in the Cardinals' 3-2 win against the Padres in the rubber match of a three-game set.
Yonder Alonso had three hits and knocked in a run for the Padres. Eric Stults (8-8) took the loss despite a 124-pitch effort. He gave up three runs on eight hits in six innings.
In Milwaukee, Brewers fans were treated to a third straight shutout against the Miami Marlins, but they needed to sit through 13 innings.
Caleb Gindl hit the game-winning home run in the bottom of the 13th as the Brewers swept a three-game series against the Marlins with a 1-0 victory. With Ryan Webb (1-4) pitching for the Marlins, Gindl led off by hammering a 1-0 pitch to left to record the first home run of his career.
John Axford (4-3) pitched perfectly through the 12th and 13th innings to pick up the win.
Milwaukee starter Wily Peralta threw eight shutout innings, scattering two hits and two walks while striking out seven. Despite earning a no-decision, it's been a great July for Peralta, who has allowed just one run over his last four starts, including a three-hit shutout against Cincinnati on July 9.
The Brewers won two of three from the Padres when the teams met for a three- game series in California in April.
