Cosart follows excellent debut with outing against A's
Jul 23, 2013 - 3:01 PM (Sports Network) - Texas-born righty Jarred Cosart makes the second start of his major-league career on Tuesday night when the Houston Astros host the Oakland Athletics in game two of a three-game series at Minute Maid Park. The 23-year-old was a 38th-round draft choice of the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008 and signed with the organization two months later.
He was 9-5 in 21 games for two Phillies clubs on the Single-A level, then split 2011 between Clearwater of the Florida State League and Corpus Christi of the Texas League after he was involved in a trade that sent Hunter Pence to Philadelphia.
Cosart was 6-7 at Double-A and Triple-A last season, then began this year at 7-4 at Triple-A before the call-up to the majors in time for a July 12 start at Tampa Bay.
The 6-foot-3, 180-pounder carried a no-hitter deep into the game and emerged with a 2-0 victory following an eight-inning effort in which he ended up allowing two hits, walked three and struck out two.
For the Athletics, 24-year-old righty Jarrod Parker aims for his first win since June 18.
The former first-round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks was 2-6 on the season after a loss to the Texas Rangers in his 10th outing of the season on May 22, then won four consecutive decisions in five starts between May 28-June 18.
He's pitched four times and gotten four consecutive no-decisions since, all in games Oakland went on to lose.
Parker has never faced the Astros.
On Monday, Josh Reddick's two-run homer in the eighth inning lifted the Athletics to a 4-3 win over the Astros in the opener of a three-game set.
Chris Young added two hits, including a solo homer, and Grant Green drove in a run for the Athletics, who have won 12 straight over the Astros.
Ryan Cook (3-2) earned the win after tossing a perfect seventh inning and Grant Balfour picked up his 26th save of the season and has converted a franchise-record 44 straight saves chances dating back to last season.
Chris Carter and J.D. Martinez each drove in a run for the Astros, losers in six straight. Wesley Wright (0-4) gave up Reddick's homer in the eighth to absorb the loss.
Starter Dallas Keuchel gave up one run on five hits and four walks over six innings.
Oakland has won all 10 meetings so far this season against Houston, the newest addition to the American League West and 15 of 16 in the all-time series.
