Mariners aim to bounce back against Twins
Jul 27, 2013 - 2:36 PM (Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners hope to bounce back as they host the Minnesota Twins for the third game of a four-part series at Safeco Field.Chris Colabello launched his first career home run in the top of the 13th inning Friday to lift the Twins to a 3-2 victory over Seattle in the second game of the set on Friday. The Mariners coasted to an 8-2 win in the series opener on Thursday before allowing the visitors to even things up.
"I was looking down at third base trying to get the signs, I thought we were going to maybe bunt, we'd talked about it in the dugout," Colabello said. "That's why I stood there for a second and looked down twice, but I was just trying to put a good swing on a ball and thankfully it worked out the way it did."
The 29-year old rookie outfielder has hit safely in both games of the series to mark the first hitting streak of his brief career.
Felix Hernandez nearly led Seattle to a victory as the hosts took a 1-0 lead into the ninth inning, but the 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner cost himself a winning decision by allowing Trevor Plouffe to connect on a single that drove in Pedro Florimon for the game-tying run.
Florimon went 2-for-5 with a double for the Twins, who have won seven of their past 10 games.
Samuel Deduno takes aim at his third consecutive win on Saturday after holding the Angels to four hits and two runs over seven innings on Monday. He wasn't happy that he took some time to get into rhythm his last time out.
"The first three innings, I was too passive, so I need to be more aggressive," Deduno said. "In the fifth, sixth and seventh innings I was very strong." The 30-year old starter has allowed more than three runs just once over his past five starts.
Minnesota had to try its luck against Hisashi Iwakuma and Hernandez in the first two games of the series, and on Saturday it will have another tough matchup against Aaron Harang.
The experienced right-hander was in the zone on Monday versus Cleveland, going seven innings with only four hits and one earned run. He was shelled for seven runs in five innings by the Red Sox 11 days before his success against the Tribe.
Seattle only generated two runs on Friday with one coming off of a solo homer by Kendrys Morales in the bottom of the 13th inning. Kyle Seager and Nick Franklin both went 3-for-6 in the losing effort.
The 41-year old Henry Blanco caught all 13 innings for Seattle on Friday after Mike Zunino went to the disabled list earlier in the day. The newly added Humberto Quintero will start on Saturday.
Minnesota has won five of the nine meetings between these clubs this season, but Seattle has won 10 of the last 15 encounters.
