Final/12
Royals down White Sox in extras
Jul 29, 2013 - 12:36 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Jarrod Dyson threw out the potential game- winning run in the 10th frame and Alex Gordon smacked a two-run homer two innings later to help the Kansas Royals complete a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox with a 4-2 decision at U.S. Cellular Field. The Royals' sixth straight win puts them at 51-51 on the season, the latest in the year they have been .500 or better since 2003.
"Getting back to .500, that was a chore," Royals manager Ned Yost remarked. "We were like nine games under at one point...so to get here was big."
David Lough knocked in a run and scored another while Miguel Tejada went 2- for-4 with an RBI in the win, which was credited to Aaron Crow (7-3) for tossing a perfect 11th inning.
Adam Dunn highlighted Chicago's offense with a solo home run, but it wasn't enough to stop the club from losing for the sixth time in its last seven games.
In the home 10th, Blake Tekotte tried scoring from second on Alejandro De Aza's base hit to center field and was thrown out by several feet on Dyson's perfect throw to the plate, keeping it a 2-2 game.
Dyson showed off his speed in the 12th when he hit a chopper to second and reached safely when Gordon Beckham rushed and couldn't get the ball out of his glove. The speedster stole second base, advanced to third when Josh Phegley's throw skipped into center field, and was able to trot home when Gordon barely cleared the center field wall for his 10th home run.
Donnie Veal (1-1) served up the game-winner and took the loss behind Hector Santiago, who scattered two runs, five hits and four walks over 6 2/3 innings.
"I tried to keep us in the game and keep it close enough that we have a chance," Santiago said of his outing.
Bruce Chen also took a no-decision after yielding two runs on three hits and a pair of walks in a six-inning start for Kansas City. Greg Holland recorded his 27th save in the 12th by stranding a pair of runners for the second straight game.
Lough's RBI single in the first inning was countered in the bottom half by Paul Konerko poking a base hit just inside the left-field foul line and knocking in Alex Rios.
Lough scored from first on Tejada's double into the left-field corner in the fourth, and Dunn took Chen deep to straightaway center in the sixth for his 25th home run of the season.
